'I've achieved the dream that I had as a little girl'

Watford Women’s midfielder Alli Palisch says she fulfilled her childhood dream and hopes her teammates remember her “for my smile, my personality and all the good things” after announcing her retirement from football.

The 29-year-old has decided to hang up her boots after a career that has seen her play in the United States, Sweden, the Netherlands and Iceland before joining the Golden Girls from London City Lionesses in August 2022.

The versatile midfielder, who could also play in defence when required, made 31 appearances for Watford last season to help them secure promotion to the Championship.

Having signed a new 12-month contract in July, Palisch featured 12 times this season as the Hornets were relegated from the second tier of the women’s game.

"Before I leave, all I want to say is thank you to the fans, you guys have been amazing," she said in a video message posted by the club.

"What a ride it’s been from last year to this year, through the good times and the bad times I think you guys have always been there for us, and it’s meant so much to us.

"After wins and great highs you were there, but even after some losses that were disappointing I would just go over to the fans and you guys make it all better. I just want to say I appreciate that.

"I’ve achieved the dream that I had as a little girl, I couldn’t think of anything other than being a professional when I was a little kid, it’s really been a dream come true.

"To my team-mates, it’s been a joy to be here every day with you guys, you’ve kept me going through some hard times and I hope that when I leave, you remember me for my smile, my personality and all good things because that’s all I ever wanted to do, be the best team player and professional."
