Ivory Coast 0-0 Egypt (4-5 pens) LIVE! Salah wins it - AFCON 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today

Ivory Coast vs Egypt - LIVE!

It’s the final day of the Africa Cup of Nations’ last-16 stage and we may well have saved the best for (almost) last as two of the continent’s heavyweights meet for a place in the quarter-finals.

Egypt are the most successful team in the competition’s history and, led by Liverpool star Mo Salah, are looking to win the tournament for the eighth time.

However, they were beaten by Nigeria in their opening group game, which is why they ended up finishing second behind the Super Eagles despite victories in their final two matches, setting up this afternoon’s intriguing clash.

Ivory Coast were also drawn in what looked a tricky group but the abysmal performance of defending champions Algeria made passage as group winners much smoother as Patrice Beaumelle’s side finished top on seven points.

That crucial missed penalty...

19:02 , Matt Verri

18:55 , Matt Verri

And breathe!

It was a really high-quality shootout from both sides on the whole, just with the exception of that Bailly penalty.

That was the only gift Egypt needed, as they kept their nerve. They’ve only scored two goals all tournament, but the Egyptians are marching on!

EGYPT WIN THE SHOOTOUT!

18:47 , Matt Verri

Mo Salah... SCORES!

Never looked like missing. Egypt win the shootout 5-4, and they will face Morocco in the quarter-finals.

Eric Bailly’s penalty has cost his country dearly.

SCORES! Ivory Coast 4-4 Egypt

18:46 , Matt Verri

Wilfied Zaha. No pressure, but got to score.

No problem! Confident stuff from the Palace man. Over to Salah to see if he can win it...

SCORES! Ivory Coast 3-4 Egypt

18:45 , Matt Verri

Abdelmonem up for Egypt, who are trusting their defenders.

Why not when they hit penalties like that, blasts it past the goalkeeper. Ivory Coast can’t afford to miss now...

SCORES! Ivory Coast 3-3 Egypt

18:44 , Matt Verri

Burnley’s Cornet to try and keep his side within touch.

And does. Very calmly done, and then into the corner... goalkeeper wasn’t far away.

SCORES! Ivory Coast 2-3 Egypt

18:43 , Matt Verri

The right-back Kamal steps up for Egypt.

Stuttering run-up, goalkeeper dives early... passes it into the opposite corner. Lovely penalty.

MISSES! Ivory Coast 2-2 Egypt

18:42 , Matt Verri

Well, well, well. Bailly up next.

MISSES! WHAT WAS THAT?! Took a run-up of about a step, and just cushions it at the goalkeeper. Tipped onto the bar. Terrible penalty.

SCORES! Ivory Coast 2-2 Egypt

18:41 , Matt Verri

Soleya makes the long walk next for Egypt.

Perfect start to the shootout so far! Low, drilled into the corner.

SCORES! Ivory Coast 2-1 Egypt

18:40 , Matt Verri

Sangare to take Ivory Coast’s second penalty.

Another calmly taken spot-kick, as the goalkeeper dives the wrong way. Into the corner.

SCORES! Ivory Coast 1-1 Egypt

18:39 , Matt Verri

Zizo up for Egypt to take their first penalty.

BRILLIANT. Lifts it into the top corner, not saving that.

SCORES! Ivory Coast 1-0 Egypt

18:38 , Matt Verri

Pepe makes no mistake! Sends Gabaski diving early and then blasts it down the middle. Perfect start.

18:37 , Matt Verri

Here we go!

Referee giving a long lecture to both goalkeepers, warning them not to come off the line. Think the message has got across.

It will be Ivory Coast, and Nicolas Pepe, to take the first penalty.

18:34 , Matt Verri

Remember Gabaski come off the bench in the final few minutes of normal time to go in goal for Egypt. Chance for him to be the hero for his country.

Teams done with their huddles, decisions made. Time for the shootout!

PENALTIES!

18:30 , Matt Verri

120 mins: Pepe has space and Cornet is making a great run through the middle... Arsenal winger takes too long and loses the ball. Now Egypt on the attack, it really is end-to-end.

Salah to the byline, pulled back to Trezeguet... SAVED! That was the moment.

And that’s the full-time whistle. We’re going to penalties!

18:27 , Matt Verri

117 mins: Trezeguet wins a corner for Egypt. Could this be their big chance...

No, Bailly gets his head on yet another cross and Ivory Coast can break. Pepe switches it out to Zaha, but it’s a terrible touch from the Crystal Palace man. He then fouls Hegazi, and Zaha is shown a yellow card as he squares up to the Egyptian defender. Lost his head a bit there.

18:25 , Matt Verri

115 mins: Zaha sends it through to Cornet, who is playing straight through the middle. Too much on the pass and it’s through to the goalkeeper.

Penalties looking inevitable...

18:23 , Matt Verri

113 mins: Trezeguet has had some real chances since coming on.

Salah cushions it into the path of Trezeguet, but he blasts it over from a really tight angle. Liverpool man was expected that to be pulled back to him.

18:22 , Matt Verri

112 mins: Deli catches Salah as he challenges for a header. Free-kick given, yellow card for the Ivory Coast defender.

Salah thinks Deli has already been booked... he hasn’t though. It’s Bailly already on a yellow.

18:20 , Matt Verri

110 mins: Sangare bulldozes his way past two Egypt players, knocks it past a third and goes down. Has he been body-checked? Referee says no.

Midfielder taking an age to get to his feet, he’s covered a lot of ground this evening.

18:19 , Matt Verri

109 mins: Sherif makes a nice run and Fotouh tries to slide the ball through to him... way too much on it and out for a goal-kick.

Not as much space so far since this second period of extra-time got underway. Understandably getting a bit tense now...

18:17 , Matt Verri

107 mins: Salah has been quieter and quieter as the match has gone on.

Standing quite central and tries to reach a long ball over the top, but once again Bailly is there to cut out any danger.

Back underway!

18:16 , Matt Verri

15 minutes away from a penalty shootout.

Both sides would love to avoid it if they can...

HALF-TIME

18:13 , Matt Verri

105 minutes done... still goalless. 15 minutes to go, and potentially penalties after that.

Ivory Coast and Egypt could be going the distance!

18:12 , Matt Verri

105 mins: Deli nearly scores from the corner! Goalkeeper came, got nowhere near it. Ivory Coast centre-back should have done better, goal was completely empty.

Haller off for Ivory Coast, Cornet on to replace him.

One minuted added on.

18:11 , Matt Verri

104 mins: Bailly has been impressive all match and he’s in the right place again to stop Sherif running onto a ball over the top.

Sangare lets fly for Ivory Coast from distance... lovely curling effort. Tipped behind for a corner.

18:09 , Matt Verri

102 mins: That’s a really nasty landing from Zaha. Challenging for a ball, falls awkwardly over the Egyptian defender and he’s landed flat on his face.

He’s getting some treatment, looks a bit dazed after that. Up now - should be ok to continue it looks like.

18:05 , Matt Verri

99 mins: Good strike from Zizo as he goes for goal from distance. Sangare parries it straight out, lucky that it didn’t drop to Trezeguet who was following it in.

Impossible to guess how this one is going to finish, both sides look capable of scoring.

18:04 , Matt Verri

97 mins: He’s been stretchered off... we’ll have to see if he’s ok to come back on at some point. Egypt down to ten for now.

Pepe holds the ball up well and keeps possession for his side, Egypt just looking to stay in their shape for now.

Back up to full-strength now though, Sherif has returned.

18:02 , Matt Verri

95 mins: Sherif collided with Haller as he won that header, and he’s down with a lot of blood coming from his mouth.

Eventful start to his time on the pitch!

18:00 , Matt Verri

93 mins: OVER THE BAR!

It’s all Egypt at the start of extra-time. They keep the pressure on from a corner, before swinging it towards Hegazi at the back post.

He nods it back across, Sherif heads it at goal but it’s just over.

17:58 , Matt Verri

91 mins: Nearly a goal within the opening minute!

Elneny slides a lovely ball through to Trezeguet, he drags the shot badly though. Almost turns it into a good cross, but Salah can’t get on the end of it. Good start from Egypt.

Back underway!

17:57 , Matt Verri

Here we go... extra-time has begun!

17:55 , Matt Verri

Looks like Sherif will be coming on at the start of extra-time for Egypt. Mohamed coming off.

Ivory Coast’s subs certainly had an impact - Zaha and Boga both looked bright.

Ivory Coast 0-0 Egypt

17:51 , Matt Verri

And that’s the end of the 90 minutes... we’re going to extra-time!

Both sides with chances to win it, but it’s still goalless. The drama continues...

17:50 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Zizo shown a yellow card for a foul on Pepe, didn’t look to be too much in that.

The Arsenal man has it out wide after good work from Zaha, and plays a ball inside... Elneny reads it really well and draws the foul. Egypt can get up the pitch.

17:48 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Corner Ivory Coast, which is sent behind by Elneny for another one.

Much better delivery second time from Pepe, right on top of the new goalkeeper. He does really well to hold, and wins the free-kick as a couple of players barge into him.

17:47 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Four minutes of added time.

Will there be a late winner? If not, we’ll very shortly be heading into extra-time.

17:45 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Gabaski on to replace Shenawy. Egypt had two goalkeepers stripped off and ready to go... clearly both trying to persuade the manager!

Shenawy holding his hamstring, no chance he was going to be able to continue with that.

17:43 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Shenawy down for Egypt, the goalkeeper planted his leg and looks to have twisted it awkwardly.

Three times the bench has asked him if he’s ok to continue, three times he has said no. Think the message is very clear...

17:41 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Very nearly!

Zaha is almost played in, but Kamal stretches and stops the ball through. The Crystal Palace is in this man though and gets the left-footed shot away... SAVED!

Haller not far away from getting on the end of the rebound, but the defence get it away.

17:39 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Ivory Coast having all the possession now, they’ve been much-improved since making a couple of subs.

Pepe running onto a ball over the top, Shenawy takes his time but eventually comes off his line to claim. Abdelmonem not impressed his goalkeeper took so long.

17:35 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Boga has seen plenty of the ball since replacing Seri for Ivory Coast and he lays it off to Pepe.

Once again the Arsenal man has the space to go for goal from outside the box, but once again it’s a poor connection and no danger to Shenawy. Egypt don’t want to let him keeping having efforts though, he’ll find his range soon.

17:33 , Matt Verri

77 mins: So poor from Mohamed, a real opportunity to play Salah through on goal.

Egypt have a two-on-one, Salah is making the run into space... Mohamed can’t direct the pass and sends it straight to the defender. Has to be doing better there.

17:32 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Ball fed through to Pepe, and he space to turn and work it onto his left foot.

Goes for goal from distance, doesn’t catch hold of it though and it bobbles straight to Shenawy.

17:29 , Matt Verri

73 mins: TREZEGUET SHOULD SCORE!

Off the bench, and he should be on the scoresheet. Great one-two and he’s in on goal, from a slightly tight angle. Opens up his body, curls a low right-footed effort towards the far corner... wide.

Big, big chance.

17:28 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Substitutes from both sides. Wilfried Zaha on for Ivory Coast, could be prove to be the difference?

Trezeguet on for Egypt. Attacking reinforcements from both managers.

17:26 , Matt Verri

70 mins: GREAT SAVE!

Here come Ivory Coast. Corner deep into the box, headed back and Haller diverts it at goal from just a few yards out. Shenawy reacts well to head it over the bar.

Egypt survive...

17:26 , Matt Verri

69 mins: That’s brilliant from Bailly!

Has it outside the box, plays such a clever reverse pass through to Haller. Unfortunately it also fooled the striker, who had jumped out of the way expected the shot.

The centre-back might need to stay in the number 10 position with vision like that.

17:23 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Ball over the top from Hegazi, Salah can keep it in. But it’s really good defending from Konan, and he wins it back as the Liverpool man tries to turn him.

Ivory Coast struggling to get any control of the match, Egypt much the better team since the break.

17:20 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Good from Bailly, who closes down Mohamed and blocks the shot, before sliding in to stop it going behind for a corner. Never a dull moment with him.

Egypt keep the pressure on, and it’s deflected into the path of Mohamed. Curls an effort towards the far corner, well over the bar.

Elneny not impressed, he was free for the pass if Mohamed had looked up and squared it.

17:17 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Ball over the top towards Aurier, but he’s not getting anywhere near that.

These sides are really evenly-matched, going to be fine margins that decides it. Plenty of players with the ability to produce a moment of magic in the next 30 minutes...

17:14 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Salah doesn’t want to pass, as he twists and turns on the edge of the box to try and find a yard for the shot.

Doesn’t get the space but goes goal anyway. Blocked. Ivory Coast up the other end and it’s a deep ball into the box, Pepe can’t get on the end of it at the back post.

17:12 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Gradel hasn’t seen much of the ball, but when he has he’s looked good. Really direct with his running.

Cross into the box is cleared away. Entertaining start to the half, end-to-end feel to it.

17:09 , Matt Verri

53 mins: BIG CHANCE!

Mo Salah has space for the first time and he can run straight at Konan. Cuts inside, plays it across the box and Soleya is completely free. One touch, and then blazes it over the bar. Had to do better from there.

Deli then nearly scores an own-goal, but Sangare saves well. Corner Egypt, they’re well on top.

17:06 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Good from Egypt, as it’s whipped to the far post and Marmoush knocks it down.

Soleya has it on the edge of the box, is quickly shut down before he can get a shot away. Lofts it into the box instead, but Bailly is well-placed to head it away.

17:04 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Pepe wins a free-kick, and Ivory Coast have a chance to put some pressure on early in the half.

Ball fired low into the box and cleared away relatively comfortably. Quality of set-pieces has been really poor from both sides so far this match.

Back underway!

17:02 , Matt Verri

Tight first-half, not much in it. Wouldn’t be a surprise to see this one go beyond 90 minutes.

Second-half is underway!

17:00 , Matt Verri

Players back out, second-half to begin very shortly...

Some first-half stats...

16:56 , Matt Verri

Ivory Coast just shading possession in the opening 45 minutes, with 53% of the ball.

Seven shots for both sides, three on target each. A lot of those from outside the box though, very few clear-cut chances in that first-half.

Match is right in the balance.

Egypt denied by the woodwork...

16:50 , Matt Verri

HALF-TIME

16:47 , Matt Verri

Ivory Coast 0-0 Egypt

Haller goes close just before the break, but the shot is too close to Shenawy. It’s goalless at half-time.

Marmoush hit the bar for Egypt and Salah had an effort tipped over, Sangare’s acrobatic effort as close as Ivory Coast have come.

16:45 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Marmoush has probably been Egypt’s brightest player in the half, and his blocked shot earns a corner.

He’ll take it himself, but once again Ivory Coast are up to the task and can head away. One minute added on.

16:42 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Salah lays the ball off and then goes down... did Gradel catch him? The linesman says yes. Free-kick Egypt, completely unnecessary from Ivory Coast - the ball had already gone.

To Hegazy at the back post, nodded back into the six-yard box but it won’t fall to an Egyptian shirt.

16:39 , Matt Verri

39 mins: As close as Ivory Coast have come!

Aurier dinks a cross into the box, Sangare is free and goes for the bicycle kick. Connects decently, but Shenawy saves easily enough.

Sangare probably had time to bring it down... but that wouldn’t have looked as good.

16:38 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Another Egypt corner, another poor Egypt corner. Too much height on it.

Hegazy clips a ball into the box for Salah, but he can’t reach it. That scenario might have worked better if their roles were reversed.

16:37 , Matt Verri

36 mins: That’s better from Egypt, they suddenly burst into life.

Salah slides a ball through to Mohamed, who goes for goal first-time at the near post. Sangare turns it behind for a corner - could have held that really.

Gradel heads it away, but it’s then launched back into the box and Sangare is slightly worried it’s going to drop under the bar. Turns it over for a corner.

16:34 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Marmoush turns out of danger really nicely and feeds it to Elneny.

A lot of space on Ivory Coast’s right wing, as Aurier is quickly dealing with some loose tape. Pepe filling in at right-back for the time being, and he is very grateful when Aurier eventually jogs back.

16:31 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Die on to replace Kessie, who looks devastated to be going off.

Great work from Gradel to burst to the byline, drills it into the box and it’s cleared behind for a corner.

Ivory Coast take it quickly, Seri swings it in... Egypt earn a cheap free-kick and they can clear the danger.

16:29 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Ivory Coast win a free-kick, Haller fouled by Hegazy about 35 yards out.

Pitch is very poor, so they go for goal and hope that it might bobble in front of Shenawy. It doesn’t cause the Egyptian goalkeeper any problems.

Kessie down again, holding his ribs. Doesn’t look like he’ll be continuing for much longer.

16:27 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Pepe fires the ball in low across the face of goal, Haller is lurking but it’s too close to Shenawy who can claim.

Kessie down for about the third time in the match, this time without any contact. Just drops to his knees. He’s got the free-kick though!

16:26 , Matt Verri

25 mins: That’s brilliant work from Aurier. Somehow stops Fotough from letting the ball run out of play, and that earns a corner for his side. Pepe can’t make the most if though, disappointing.

Egypt break with Salah, who plays it across to Kamal and his shot from 30 yards is an extremely tame one.

16:22 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Salah’s first opening of the match, as he finds space on the edge of the box.

One touch to control, then swivels and fires at goal... Sangare tips it over the bar for a corner. That was really sharp from Salah.

He’ll take the corner too. Poor ball, Bailly heads it away.

16:19 , Matt Verri

19 mins: A lot of Ivory Coast’s play is coming down the right, with Aurier and Pepe both offering a threat.

The full-back nearly bulldozes his way into the box, but he loses the ball before he can cross towards Haller.

16:17 , Matt Verri

17 mins: MARMOUSH HITS THE BAR!

He almost makes up for his free-kick seconds later. Goes for goal from miles out, catches it so sweetly. Goalkeeper isn’t getting anywhere near it as it dips, but smashes back off the bar. So close.

16:16 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Ball fizzed in to Pepe on the edge of the box, who tries to flick it on to Haller but goes down. He’s certain he’s been fouled, but nothing given.

Egypt then have a free-kick, as Aurier catches Fotouh. Another chance for them to put a ball into the box.

It’s another real waste though. Marmoush with the awful delivery.

16:13 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Mohamed wins the flick-on, but in doing so he then crashes into Konan who is down holding his face.

Gradel and Kessie both complaining to the referee, they want a card shown for that. Just a free-kick.

16:10 , Matt Verri

10 mins: A long way out, so Salah just floats it into the box, but unfortunately for him and Egypt it’s floated straight into the arms of Sangare.

Not Salah’s best work.

16:09 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Bailly shown a yellow card very early on. Long match ahead for the Ivory Coast centre-back now.

Mohamed just got to the ball first and knocked it away, and Deli had already committed. Brought the Egypt forward down and he’s into the book.

16:08 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Decent chance for Ivory Coast, after they play it out well and beat Egypt’s press.

Seri plays it out to the right wing where Pepe would have been one-on-one against Fotouh, but there’s far too much pace on the ball and it’s out for a throw-in.

16:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Ivory Coast with most of the early possession and they work it out wide to Gradel.

Cuts inside and drives past Elneny, gets the shot away but it’s blocked. Aurier then gets in on the other side of the pitch, into the box... goes down. Did he get a shove in the back? Referee thinks not.

16:03 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Pepe and Fotouh battle for the ball right in the corner, and the Arsenal man eventually gives away the foul.

Salah starting on the right for Egypt - he needs to be on top form, to help fire a side that don’t score many goals into the next round.

First shot of the match, Kessie from range. Low, and well wide.

KICK-OFF!

16:00 , Matt Verri

We are underway!

Will it be Ivory Coast or Egypt who secure a quarter-final clash against Egypt?

15:53 , Matt Verri

Here we go then... players are out onto the pitch!

Time for the national anthems, and then we’ll be pretty much ready for kick-off.

History on Egypt’s side...

15:39 , Matt Verri

15:32 , Matt Verri

Just two last 16 matches left to play - this one, and then Mali vs Equatorial Guinea later today.

Tough assignment up next for either Ivory Coast or Egypt in the quarter-finals. They’ll face Morocco, who had to come from behind to beat Malawi in their last 16 match.

Achraf Hakimi was the hero, scoring a wonderful free-kick to win it.

How they got here...

15:21 , Matt Verri

Ivory Coast sealed their place as group winners with an impressive 3-1 over Algeria in their last match. Only Cameroon scored more goals than them in the group stage, so the likes of Nicolas Pepe and Sebastien Haller will be confident of keeping their good form going.

Egypt were on the back foot after an opening defeat to Nigeria, but bounced back with two narrow wins. In contrast to Ivory Coast, there were just three goals across their group-stage games.

Infantino: Biennial World Cup will make Africans less likely to cross Med

14:45 , Malik Ouzia

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has bizarrely claimed that modifications to football’s calendar will make African migrants likely to embark upon dangerous Mediterranean Sea crossings in search of a better life in Europe.

The head of football’s world governing body was speaking at the Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, discussing proposed reforms to the global football calendar, which include the potential of World Cups being held every two years.

He said the proposals were vital to give the football world outside of Europe hope, adding: “We need to give hope to Africans so they don’t need to cross the Mediterranean in order to find, maybe, a better life but more probably death in the sea.

“We need to give opportunities and we need to give dignity, not by giving charity but by allowing the rest of the world to participate.”

Ivory Coast team news

14:25 , Malik Ouzia

Ivory Coast coach Patrice Beaumelle has a number of selection headaches to consider.

In defence, Beaumelle is set to return Eric Bailly to the starting XI having rested him for the Algeria match. Badra Ali Sangare, Serge Aurier, Simon Deli and Ghislain Konan have also been regulars during the tournament so far.

The midfield trio of Jean-Michel Seri, Franck Kessie and Ibrahim Sangare have stood out for the Ivorians and will line up alongside each other in Douala.

A clean bill of health means only tactical reasons will be under consideration when setting up in attack. Sebastian Haller was criticised for his display in the opener against Equatorial Guinea but was defended by his coach, before scoring past Sierra Leone.

Burnley winger Maxwel Cornet lost his place after the first match to Nicolas Pepe, who has scored in both of his starts since. Wilfried Zaha and Max Gradel will compete for the spot on the opposite flank.

Predicted Ivory Coast XI: B. Sangare; Aurier, Bailly, Deli, Konan; Kessie, Seri, I. Sangare; Pepe, Gradel, Haller.

Egypt team news

14:10 , Malik Ouzia

Akram Tawfik and Ahmed Fatouh are out after departing the Pharaohs’ group opener with Nigeria due to injury.

Carlos Quieroz will once again hand Mohamed Salah the reins to the attack, most likely alongside Mostafa Mohamed and Omar Marmoush.

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny should be joined by Amr El Solia and Abdallah Said in the centre of the park. The duo have started each of the last two matches after Trezequet and Hamdi Fathi were dropped following the Nigeria loss.

Ahmed Hegazy will likely have Mohamed Abdelmonem with him in defence, after his winning goal against Sudan last time out.

Predicted Egypt XI: El Shenawy; Abdel Wahed, Hegazy, Abdelmonem, Ashraf; Elneny, Said, El Solia; Salah, Marmoush, Mohamed.

Head-to-head record

14:00 , Malik Ouzia

The two teams have not met since a 4-2 win for the Ivorians in a 2013 friendly.

Ivory Coast wins: 7

Draws: 3

Egypt wins: 11

Standard Sport prediction

13:53 , Malik Ouzia

Two teams with lofty ambitions, it is perhaps the Ivorians who come into the game on the better form. However, Egypt have shown some stout defensive prowess so far. This one may go all the way...

A 1-1 draw.
