Liverpool has 10 players at Euro 2024 in Germany. Some of them are understandably enjoying the tournament more than others.

Hungary, for instance, has suffered two defeats, so it is unlikely to have been an enjoyable experience for Dominik Szoboszlai. Two poor performances from England have brought heat on to Trent Alexander-Arnold too.

One member of the Reds’ squad who has yet to feature too much is Diogo Jota. He played the final 27 minutes of Portugal’s 2-1 win over Czechia. He will hope to feature more when his nation takes on Turkey on Saturday. Jota revealed that he received a message from his former manager Jürgen Klopp following a disappointment against the Czechs.

The 27-year-old thought he had scored a winning goal in the 87th minute, only to see it disallowed following a review by the Video Assistant. While Jota will have experienced that feeling in the past, he had used his celebration to highlight that his partner is expecting their third child. A moment which should have been special to the forward and his family was sadly spoiled.

Jota spoke about it in a press conference prior to the clash with Turkey. He revealed that Klopp had contacted him following the Czechia match.

“By chance he sent a message after the first game,” Jota said (via O Jogo). “He is a coach who doesn’t miss anything, he knows the moments when he should talk to the players.”

“It was a word of support for my goal being disallowed and having a special meaning for me,” he continued. “But then we won the three points, that was the most important thing.”

Klopp is renowned for his man-management skills, and while he obviously no longer has to employ them with Liverpool players, he still cares for his former squad. Jota didn’t feature in the final five games of 2023/24 due to injury, meaning he signed off for Klopp with a goal in the 3-1 win at Fulham.

The Portuguese forward also speak about his fitness status. “I’ve worked since my last injury to be in the best physical shape possible,” he said. “I feel good and capable of starting a game. I’m not going to say I can play 90 or 120 [minutes], but I feel good physically.” Even if it is no longer his professional concern, Klopp will welcome that news.

Liverpool.com says: It speaks volume for Klopp the man, rather than the manager, that he reached out to Jota after his former player suffered a disappointment. Whatever other skills Arne Slot possesses, replicating Klopp in this regard will be essential.
