Thousands of people lined the streets of Ashington, Northumberland on Tuesday to pay their respects before the funeral of England great Jack Charlton.

Charlton died on July 10 at the age of 85 having been diagnosed with lymphoma in the last year and also battled dementia.

A member of England's World Cup-winning squad of 1966, revered centre-back 'Big Jack' spent his entire 23-year club career at Leeds United - making a club-record 773 appearances - and as a manager guided the Republic of Ireland to three major tournaments in 10 years, including their very first at Euro 88.

Charlton - the 1967 Football Writers' Association (FWA) Player of the Year who was appointed as an OBE in 1974 - also managed Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough and Newcastle during a football career spanning five decades before retiring in 1996, when he was also given honorary Irish citizenship.

On Tuesday, Charlton's funeral cortege travelled around his hometown of Ashington, where thousands of people came out to pay their respects with floral tributes, signs, shirts and flags.

There was applause as the pallbearer led the procession down one main street before the cortege went on to Newcastle, where there was a private service held at West Road Crematorium.

Following Charlton's death, his family - including younger brother Sir Bobby Charlton - paid tribute to a "friend to many" and a "much-adored husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather".

"We cannot express how proud we are of the extraordinary life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people in different countries and from all walks of life," the Charlton family said.

"He was a thoroughly honest, kind, funny and genuine man who always had time for people.

"His loss will leave a huge hole in all our lives but we are thankful for a lifetime of happy memories."
