There have been some impressive performances in Somerset Seconds' recent matches that have been played at Taunton Vale Sports Club.

Last week in the Second XI championship they beat their Middlesex counterparts chasing down 306 for victory which they reached for the loss of vie wickets to win with a day to spare. The feature of the Somerset second innings was Jack Leach’s 104 off 166 balls, with 16 fours, only the England spinners second century.

During the course of his innings Leach shared a partnership of 116 with Thomas Rew, who at 16 years  old is half the England bowlers age. Once Leach departed Rew added 84 for the fourth wicket with Josh Thomas who hit 48 before departing and remained unbeaten on 85 off 144 balls with nine fours and a six to see Somerset home.

Earlier this week Somerset hosted Northamptonshire also in the Second XI Championship, and  batting first home skipper Sean Dickson, who opened with Ben Church made 70, off 111 balls with eight fours and two sixes while Church  made 31 his best for the Seconds.

Josh Thomas then came in at number three with the score on 60 for one and remained at the crease for almost 70 overs, during which time he shared a sixth wicket partnership of 106 with Oscar Coleman who hit 52 off 65 balls with 10 fours- his best score at this level.

Josh Thomas who is in his first year on the staff then added 65 with Ned Leonard who made 36, before he was out for 102 off 151 balls  with 12 fours and two sixes, his maiden century for Somerset in the Second XI championship. Alfie Ogborne then hit an unbeaten 39 to see Somerset reach 431 all out.   

When Northants replied they scored 317 of which former Ciderman George Bartlett hit 152 while Alfie Ogborne claimed five for 53.

Batting for a second time Somerset made 317 all out Fin Hill hitting 123 off 166 balls with 19 fours.

The match concludes on Thursday.
