Jake Shields Issued Community Service for Post-Fight Palhares Punch
World Series of Fighting welterweight Jake Shields went before the Nevada Athletic Commission on Monday, Sept. 14, to answer for his actions in an altercation with Rousimar Palhares at WSOF 22 on Aug. 1.
Shields accused Palhares of raking his eyes several times during the fight, which he says affected the outcome. After the conclusion of the fight, Palhares, like he has several times in the past, was slow to let go of the finishing submission hold, even when referee Steve Mazzagatti intervened.
After Mazzagatti was finally successful in getting Palhares to relinquish the hold, Shields punched Palhares in the face. That action was what landed Shields before the commission.
Shields explained on Monday that the punch was the result not only of Palhares being slow to relinquish the submission hold, but perhaps more so due to the fact that he raked Shields' eyes several times during the fight. Shields said the eye rakes compromised his vision, and affected the bout's outcome.

While the commission did not endorse Shields' reaction, it certainly seemed to come to the conclusion that his actions were somewhat understandable, as Shields' punishment was a hefty dose of community service with no fines or suspensions.
The commissioners voted unanimously to assess Shields 50 hours of community service to be performed in or near his community of residence, for which he must provide documentation of completion to the commission's office. He was given a six-month time frame to complete his community service.
Palhares is also required to go before the commission to answer for his part in the debacle, but was granted a continuance, so he did not go before the commission on Monday.
