James Monroe outruns Princeton 67-62 in Little General cons

Dec. 30—BECKLEY — James Monroe overcame a slow start to the second half to post a 67-62 win over Class AAAA Princeton in the Pepsi division consolation game of the Little General Battle for the Armory Friday.

The two-time defending Class A state champion Mavericks scored the final nine points of the game.

Ryan Mann scored a career-high 23 points and had the Mavericks' final seven points of the game.

"Ryan's thing is defense," coach Matt Sauvage said. "We told him before the game that we wanted him to assert himself a little bit more (on the offensive side) and he asserted himself a whole lot more."

Down 62-58, Ryan Cole got the Mavericks comeback started with a basket with 2:40 remaining.

Mann then scored to tie it with 1:31 remaining. As the Mavs defense clamped down, Mann closed it out at the foul line.

He had a lot of help on the offensive side, with Cole adding 13, Layton Dowdy 12 and Brady Baker 10.

The Mavericks shot 56 percent from the field (23-41).

Princeton was led by Nik Fleming, who had 15, Gavin Stover 14 and Koen Sartin 12.
