James Tavernier and Connor Goldson Rangers transfer sales urged to fund Jack Butland deal

Peter Grant reckons Rangers should consider selling James Tavernier and Connor Goldson to help afford a bumper new deal for standout Jack Butland.

The Ibrox club are open to offers for the majority of their squad this summer with manager Philippe Clement already explaining how an overhaul will take place. The likes of Jefte and Clint Nsiala have already agreed deals with the club while five exits have been sanctioned by the boss.

Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq are believed to be keen on the Gers' defensive pair and Grant believes it would be a shrewd business decision to sell the duo - aged 31 and 32 respectively - to earn extra cash they could use to keep Butland in Glasgow amid Premier League transfer interest.

"I asked you the question what would Rangers fans think?" Grant posed. "Would you rather keep Butland or get money for the two boys and keep Butland?

"Me personally, I would because I think a goalkeeper is vital for you and if I could give Jack Butland a few extra shillings to extend his contract I would definitely do that because I definitely think the manager looks at them and thinks I need something different.

"I need defenders that are going to defend well and try to keep that level. For all the things he’s done going forward James Tavernier, you’ve still got to say there’s question marks about his defending.

"I also think the same with Goldson so I think it’s definitely something Philippe Clement’s looked at and thought I need to improve that."
