Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher will be delighted that Manchester United has decided to keep Erik ten Hag at the club, after slamming the Dutch head coach this past season.

After a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on May 6, Carragher claimed that United was one of the most "poorly coached teams" in the Premier League after the team was completely outclassed by an opponent below it in the table. That defeat was just 19 days before United faced Manchester City in the FA Cup final, although it managed to beat the champions and lift the iconic trophy.

The FA Cup triumph perhaps papered over the cracks at United, a team that had just recorded its worst finish in Premier League history. The team has lost much of its identity since legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013, although it has still managed to win some major trophies along the way.

United had reportedly decided to fire Ten Hag a year before his contract was due to expire, but following an end-of-season review, the owners reversed their decision and will allow the 54-year-old to continue coaching next season. Carragher, who has shown no remorse in mocking United over the years, will be ecstatic following his previous assessment.

Speaking on Sky Sports after United was beaten 4-0 against Palace last month, Carragher said: "This is one of the most poorly coached teams in the Premier League, that's a fact. Your performance level will drop when you lose your best players," Carragher said.

"Ten Hag needs performances, he needs belief. You've got to make us believe there's something here. I struggled to see how United would win tonight. No United team should be getting beaten 4-0 by Palace.

"Man United's U23 team, I'd still expect them not to lose 4-0. I've never been a coach or a manager, but I've been a player and some of the things I see are just wrong."

United was missing key players ahead of the game, as Bruno Fernandes, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, and Luke Shaw were all injured. But the manner of the defeat led to concerns, and it isn't the first time that's happened under Ten Hag.

It's clear to see that since Ferguson left, the club standards have dropped, but United also lost 4-0 against Brentford at the start of the 2022-23 season. The biggest loss of all under Ten Hag was when Liverpool won 7-0 at Anfield, a game that will go down in history.

Ten Hag hasn't had it easy though, as his first full season was dominated by the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, who conducted an unsanctioned interview calling out the club for being "stuck in the past." He's also had to discipline English players Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, with the latter joining Borussia Dortmund on loan.

Sancho is due back in Manchester this summer and will now have to face Ten Hag again before his future is resolved. United are lacking goals and had a negative goal difference in the Premier League last season, so Ten Hag could do with Sancho performing just as he did for Dortmund.
