Her impressive career also featured a 2017 role in popular ITV drama Victoria, as the headstrong and witty Duchess of Buccleuch.

The show's lead Jenna Coleman has shared a touching tribute to her co-star, following the news of her death.

Jenna posted an image to social media showing Dame Diana behind the scenes of filming the ITV period drama, along with other cast members.

"Here is Dame Diana Rigg chilling on the props truck. She knew all the best tricks. Naughty and fearless. Hero and Legend. RIP DDR," she wrote.

Many more tributes have been paid by those who knew and admired Dame Diana.

Dame Diana's daughter, actress Rachael Stirling, said her mother died of cancer, after being diagnosed in March.

"She spent her last months joyfully reflecting on her extraordinary life, full of love, laughter and a deep pride in her profession," Rachael added.
