Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong has previously opened the door to a move to Liverpool amid fresh transfer speculation. The Dutch defender scored 14 times and provided a further 12 assists as Leverkusen won a maiden Bundesliga title.

His focus for now will be on Netherlands' Euro 2024 campaign but there remains uncertainty around his future with Manchester United also interested. And SportBILD claims Liverpool remains an admirer of Frimpong.

Frimpong spent time at Manchester City's academy as a youngster before moving to Celtic. He was asked about a potential move back to the Premier League in February, when Xabi Alonso was heavily linked with the Liverpool job.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport, he said: "Liverpool is a great club with history. That would be great. Who knows what the future will bring."

Alonso opted to remain with Leverkusen to continue his coaching journey but it is unclear if Frimpong will do the same. He reportedly has a $43m (£34m/€40m) release clause in his contract with the Bundesliga side, which expires later this week.

There is likely to be further competition for his services though with Spanish publication SPORT reporting that Barcelona is also keen. But the La Liga giants' financial issues are well-known and in order to activate Frimpong's release clause, Barca would have to sell players first.

Frimpong has played at both wing-back and further forward on the right flank this season and his versatility could prove a real asset to Liverpool. New boss Arne Slot is believed to be on the lookout for a wide attacker this summer as he adds his own stamp to the squad.

Alonso will likely want to keep him though and spoke very highly of the 23-year-old before the Europa League final defeat to Atalanta. "Since I got here for the first time, since the first day, Jeremie has been a key player for us and for myself ," he said. "He's a great guy, His personality… he brings a lot of joy to the locker room."

Liverpool.com says: Frimpong would be an excellent addition to any top side this summer but it is unclear just where he would fit into Arne Slot's line-up. Even if Trent Alexander-Arnold was to move into midfield permanently, Slot still has Conor Bradley as a full-back option. If a winger is to be targeted, it would probably be on the opposite flank too.
