Joe Gomez has signed a new five year contract at Liverpool, fending off Premier League interest.

Gomez has been the subject of several enquiries since last season but made it clear to interested parties he had no intention of quitting Anfield this summer as he sees his long-term future on Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp wasted no time renewing the 25-year-old’s terms as he sees him as a crucial part of the squad.

In the immediate term, Gomez strengthens Liverpool’s centre-back options and provides cover for right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. Gomez is backing himself to re-establish his position as the preferred centre-half alongside Virgil Van Dijk. Gomez was a first pick before suffering serious injury while on international duty in 2020. He will also be hoping to push himself back into Gareth Southgate's plans.

Upon joining Liverpool in 2015 - signed by Brendan Rodgers from Charlton Athletic - Gomez initially broke into the side as a left back. Such versatility explains why Liverpool would not entertain bids for the England international.

“Obviously, I have been here quite a while now, but in the grand scheme of things I still feel young and the best years are ahead of me," said Gomez.

"I have got more to learn and the time to do that.

“I think I have the platform here to do it with the manager and the coaching staff around me and my teammates, to make sure the best years are ahead.”

One defender on his way out of Liverpool is full-back Neco Williams, poised to join Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £17 million.

Earlier this week, former Liverpool striker Divock Origi signed a four-year contract with AC Milan.

The 27-year-old left Anfield after six years when his deal expired this summer, having scored 41 times in 175 matches with his goals in the semi-final and final of the 2019 Champions League proving decisive in winning the club's sixth European Cup.
