John Lineker Makes Weight on Final Attempt, but Should UFC Risk Him in a Title Shot?
During his two-and-a-half years in the UFC, John Lineker has become one of the most devastating strikers in the flyweight division. Having amassed a 5-2 record in the Octagon, he should be on the verge of a title shot, but he has consistently struggled making weight.
Lineker struggled once again at Friday's UFC Fight Night 56: Shogun vs. St. Preux weigh-in in Uberlândia, Brazil, initially stepping on the scale at 126.7 pounds. The fight with Ian McCall is a non-title bout, so he was only 0.7 pounds over the mark. Lineker was given an additional hour to try and hit the mark. He eventually reached the 126-pound limit on his final attempt.

There have been several occasions in the past, however, when he was so far over that he couldn't finish the cut, instead having to fight at a catchweight. His fights with Louis Gaudinot, Jose Maria Tome, and Phil Harris all had to be reclassified as catchweights ranging from 127 to 129 pounds due to Lineker failing to make weight.
He has also had to utilize additional time to make the final weight on several other occasions, as he did on Friday.
Three of his seven fights thus far under the UFC banner have been outside the flyweight division. Saturday's bout with McCall is supposed to be a pivotal bout in terms of a flyweight title shot, but with Lineker consistently struggling to hit the mark, UFC officials have to question whether or not they want to risk a future title fight on Lineker's abilities to make weight.
He, of course, has to beat McCall before that is even a consideration, but should he win on Saturday, company officials will have to consider whether or not Lineker is worth the risk.
