Jon Jones' Huge Break: Recent Citations Stemmed from Driving 75 in a 35-mph Zone

Officer Who Pulled Over Jon Jones Accused of Racial Profiling

Jon Jones questioned the media about reporting on his recent traffic citations in Albuquerque, N.M., for driving without a license, no proof of insurance, and no proof of registration, by running down the list of rehabilitation measures he's undergone since being charged with felony hit and run. It appears he could have been handed much more serious charges than the citations he ultimately received.

In the audio below, which was acquired by TMZ Sports, the officer that pulled Jones over on Jan. 31 says that he had the former UFC champion on radar driving 75 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone.

“The reason I stopped you, you're going 75 down Alameda in a 35, okay?” the officer told Jones.

Jones seemed perplexed before explaining that he did not have his driver's license nor proof of insurance or registration in the vehicle because he was late for practice at Jackson's MMA. He added that he had lost his driver's license and had typically been driving with his passport alongside him, although he didn't have it with him on Jan. 31. The officer explained that driving with a passport instead of a license was also illegal.

“You're getting a huge break dude,” said the officer, who explained he could have written Jones a citation for reckless driving.

Jones is currently on probation in New Mexico after reaching a plea agreement to settle the felony hit and run charges against him stemming from an accident he caused in April of 2015.
