Joplin girls, Webb City boys claim team titles at Carthage Invitational

Mar. 29—CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Joplin girls track and field team rode its depth up and down the roster to capture first place at the 40th annual Carthage Invitational on Thursday at Carthage High School.

Joplin led the way with 102 points. Marshfield was second with 90.5 points, and Carthage was third with 83. Webb City was fourth with 78.5, and Carl Junction finished fifth with 77.5 points.

On the boys side, the Webb City Cardinals won the team title with 133 points. Willard was second with 95, Lamar third with 80, Joplin fourth with 75 and Neosho fifth with 73 points.

Events

Webb City's Chase Stilley logged the first win of the day when she captured first place in the girls high jump with a leap of 1.52 meters. Three other athletes cleared 1.52 meters too, but Stilley did so in fewer attempts for the win. Also jumping 1.52 meters were Marshfield's Kailan Sarkissian and Grace Kimrey, and McDonald County's Savannah Lieb.

In the boys long jump, Lamar senior Chase Quarry got the win with a leap of 6.6 meters, besting Springfield Central's Dalvin Adams (6.5 meters). Carl Junction's Ryder Pyles was third with a 6.46-meter effort.

Marshfield's Abigail McBride won the girls triple jump with a 10.85-meter leap. Nevada's Lanie Jackson was runner-up (10.17 meters), and McDonald County's Carlie Martin was third (10.14 meters).

Adyson Clark of Marshfield won the girls discus with a 33.17-meter toss. Carthage's Chasity Straw was second (31.77 meters), and Lamar's Audra Lloyd was third (31.73 meters).

In the boys shot put, Lamar's Trace Wollridge was the victor with a 16.14-meter effort. Joplin's Dontrell Holt was second (15.22 meters), and Carl Junction's Gavin Beachner was third (15.19 meters).

Webb City's Tucker Liberatore took first in the boys javelin with a throw of 50.63 meters. Mount Vernon's Hunter Dawson was runner-up (48.88 meters), and Carl Junction's Aidan Beachner was third (47.92 meters).

The Webb City girls 4x800 meter relay team (Emma Golubski, Aspen White, Brooke Hedger and Emily Countryman) took first place with a time of 10:27.31. Springfield Central (Alexandria Li, Sophia Brown, Annalise Freeman and Victoria Li) finished second (10:35.39). Carthage (Maggie Boyd, Jenna Calhoun, Grace Brown and Evelynn Carrol) finished third with a 10:35.45 time.

Webb City also came out on top in the boys 4x800 meters. Dakota Grove, Noah Lankard, Mason Hedger and Evan Stevens combined for a winning time of 8:13.4. Lamar (Cameron Bailey, David Dunham, Ryder Friend and Pierce Heins) finished second (8:42.5). Willard (Barrett Jarvis, Kendrik Troutt, Parker McCreary and Nathaniel Sprinkel) finished third (8:48.6).

Willard's Madison Davis won the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.4 seconds; Neosho's Jazmyn Washington posted a 16.64 time for second place, and Monett's Jenna Heald was third with a time of 17.28.

Willard captured the top two spots in the boys 110-meter hurdles. Hayden Hall (15.85) took first, and teammate William Ndiba was runner-up (16.47). Joplin's Avarus Kuhn Woffird was close behind with a time of 16.48 for third place.

Carl Junction sprinter Sydney Ward won the girls 100-meter dash (12.26.) Willard's Elise Murray (12.61) was second, and Joplin's Brylee Strickland (12.66) was third.

In the boys 100 meters, Lamar's Ian Ngugi was the winner with a time of 11.46. Willard's Landen Johnson (11.55) was second, and Joplin's Davin Thomas (11.57) was third.

Webb City claimed three of the top four spots in the boys pole vault. Jadon Brisco won the event with a 3.95-meter vault. Marshfield's Carson Rockwood (3.8 meters) was second with fewer attempts at 3.8 meters than WCHS's Luke Gayman (third place) and John Makowski (fourth place.)

In the girls long jump. Marshfield's Abigail McBride won with a jump of 4.98 meters. Joplin's Kendall Nyarango was second (4.96 meters) and Webb City's Jaylee VanBecelaere was third (4.83 meters).

The Willard girls finished first in the 4x200 meter relay. Avianna Simpson, Madison Davis, Harley Durr and Camille Franks turned in a time of 1:47.14 for the win. McDonald County (Carlie Martin, Corina Holland, Ireona Nirka and Samantha Dowd) was second with a time of 1:48.09 and Joplin (Phia Vogel, Abigayle Lowery, Nyarango and Abigail Eckert) was third, at 1:48.45.

Joplin's Tayshaun Palmer, Avarus Kuhn-Wofford, Aiden Scourten and Davin Thomas combined to win the boys 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:32.34. Carthage (Braxton McBride, Henry Latham, Jackson Hettinger and Joseph Childs) finished second at 1:32.58. Carl Junction (Quincy Thomure, William Coats, Jaxton Wobken and Tony Stewart) was third with a time of 1:33.99.

Brooke Hedger of Webb City was the victor in the girls 1,600-meter race with a time of 5:21.84. Joplin's Katherine Schaeffer was runner-up (5:26.52) and Lamar's Abigail Biggs (5:36.45) was third.

In the boys 1,600-meter event, East Newton's Chase Sorrell logged a 4:22.19 for the win. Webb City took the next two spots with Evan Stevens finishing second (4:30.53) and teammate Mason Hedger third (4:34.41).

The Willard girls (Kenadie Johnson, Madison Davis, Durr and Elise Murray) won the 4x100m relay with a time of 49.5 seconds. Joplin (Vogel, Lowery, Eckert and Brylee Strickland) finished second (49.89) and Carthage (Elsie Willis, Ashleigh Rowden, Millie Templeman and Lexa Youngblood) was third (50.87).

Lamar's Aiden Sheat, Ngugi, Chase Quarry and Adam Kluhsman combined for a time of 43.66 to win the boys 4x100 meter relay. Willard (Layton Teeter, Evien Robinson, Justin Frederick and Landen Johnson) finished second (44:31) and Carl Junction (Stewart, Ryder Pyles, Coats and Wobken) was third (44.97).

Joplin's Strickland won the girls 400-meter run with a time of 58.65. Carl Junction's Sydney Ward was second (59.3) and Monett's Vayla Smith was third (1:02.33).

The Neosho boys captured the first two spots in their 400-meter race. Izaiah Hill won with a time of 49.98 seconds, and Isaiah Keezer was second (50.94). Lamar's Pierce Heins was third (51.37).

In the girls javelin, Carl Junction's Madilyn Olds turned in a 35.95-meter throw for the win. Monett's Morgan Wright was runner-up (30.49 meters), and CJ's Bella Montez was third (30.33 meters).

Carl Junction's Pyles won the boys triple jump with a 13.36-meter leap, and Marshfield's Brayden Hicks (13.08 meters) was second. Springfield Central's Tyrique Brooks (13.04 meters) finished third.

Willard's Madison Davis captured first in the girls 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.24. Joplin's Kiki Thom was second (49.42) and Carthage's Willis was third (49.54).

The Carl Junction girls logged a 1-2 finish in the pole vault. Acadia Badgley won the event with a 3.23-meter performance. CJ teammate Brooke Jasperson was second (2.9 meters), and Marshfield's Chloe Bateman was third (2.75 meters).

Kuhn-Wofford finished first in the boys 300-meter intermediate hurdles for Joplin with a time of 41.36. Carthage's Daryl Martin was second (42.03 seconds), and William Ndiba from Willard finished third (42.29).

Adyson Clark of Marshfield won the girls shot put with a heave of 12.07 meters. Carthage's Chasity Straw was second (10.8 meters), and Carl Junction's Izzy Southern was third (10.58 meters).

Webb City's Brooke Hedger won the girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.71. Joplin's Schaeffer was second (2:25.16), and Ella Hayter of Willard was third (2:25.45).

Webb City's Nathaniel Miller won the boys discus with a 46.31-meter throw. Nevada's Grady Stewart (42.49 meters) was second, and Joplin's Neil Barstow (41.25 meters) was third.

McDonald County's Dowd won the girls 200-meter run (25.24). She edged out Carl Junction's Ward (25.79). Joplin's Strickland was third (26.26).

Hill claimed the boys high jump for Neosho after a 1.9-meter leap. Hiill and two other athletes all reached 1.9 meters, but Hill did so with fewer attempts. Webb City's Ryan Reid was second, and Willard's Mason Rickman was third.

Hill also won the boys 200-meter dash with a time of 22.29. Central's Dalvin Adams (22.46) was second and Lamar's Ngugi was third (22.95).

East Newton's Sorrell got his second win of the day with a victory in the boys 800-meter run. Sorrell's time of 1:57.32 beat Carthage's Henry Laytham (1:58.39) and Webb City's Noah Lankard (2:01.95).

Joplin's Schaeffer won the girls 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:07.14 to beat second-place finisher, Mount Vernon's Riley Simons (12:24.21) and Webb City's Countryman, who finished third (12:28.69).

The Webb City boys swept the top three spots in the 3,200-meter run. Stevens won the event with a time of 9:38.65. Mason Hedger was second (9:56.85), and Andrew Dawson was third (9:59.04).

In the girls 4x400 meter relay, McDonald County's Martin, Holland, Nirka and Dowd claimed their second win of the day when they combined for a first-place time of 4:17.22. Carthage (Rowden, Boyd, Evelyn Carrol and Youngblood) finished second at 4:20.05. Webb City (Chase Stilley, Emma Golubski, Tatum Christensen and Brooke Hedger) was third (4:20.76).

Neosho's Keezer, William Ebbinghaus, Phoenix Rhatigan and Hill won the boys 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:26.79. Carthage (McBride, Laytham, Eddy Fuentes and Joseph Childs) finished second (3:30.56), and McDonald County (Ryder Martin, Lane Pratt, Aidrian Short and Joshua Pacheco) was third with a time of 3:35.84.
