Jorge Masvidal: 'I am a fan' of Kamaru Usman's knockout punch at UFC 261

Jorge Masvidal loves MMA. That seems normal for a talented fighter like Masvidal, but his love goes a lot deeper. He loves it so much that he can see the beauty in it even when that beauty lands on his face and knocks him out.

In an interview with ESPN's Ariel Helwani, Masvidal talked about his fight against Kamaru Usman at UFC 261 and the punch that knocked him out. He went in-depth on the moments leading up to that, describing what he was thinking and his strategy at the time. Then he stated his admiration for Usman's skill and technique, even though that's how he lost the fight.

"I thought he was going in for a shot and when I realized it wasn’t a shot, it was too late. I was throwing my check left hook but it was already too late. I read the information wrong. So he sold it to me beautifully and that’s why he got those results. Gosh. Of that moment right there, I am a fan. Because I love the sport so much. It’s just beautiful technique."

Masvidal is just a few days removed from being knocked out by that very punch, but he's able to take a step back, look at it objectively, and see how great it was. He recognized that he misread the situation and got taken down by a perfectly executed punch.

Not every fighter would be able to appreciate a move that rendered them unconscious. Masvidal just loves his sport.
