Jose Aldo to Fight Conor McGregor at UFC 189, But There's a Back-Up Plan
The UFC featherweight championship fight between Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor at UFC 189 is a go, according to a company statement released on Wednesday.
Officials announced that Aldo did not suffer a broken rib as previously reported by multiple outlets on Tuesday, which spurred concern over the fight being in jeopardy. Aldo, however, did suffer a bone bruise, but he fully intends on facing McGregor at the July 11 pay-per-view card in Las Vegas, according to the UFC.
“In light of recent reports regarding the status of UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, UFC has received official medical confirmation from several doctors that Aldo did not suffer a broken rib,” read the statement. “Following a review of the scans, it has been determined that the champion suffered a bone bruise to his rib and cartilage injury during training.
“With this news, Aldo has expressed that he has every intention of facing Conor McGregor at UFC 189.
“While Aldo has indicated that he will compete in Las Vegas on July 11, UFC has confirmed a contingency plan. No.1 featherweight contender Chad Mendes will face McGregor for the interim UFC featherweight championship in the event Aldo cannot compete.
“UFC remains committed to delivering the featherweight and the welterweight championship fights at UFC 189 during UFC International Fight Week in Las Vegas.”

Worries regarding the UFC 189 main event began to circulate when SporTV reported that Aldo suffered a broken rib during a morning sparring session on Tuesday. The report went on to say the injury was confirmed through two tests, including a CT scan.
As the injury went public and began to make more waves through the media, UFC fighters from all around began to express their interest in facing McGregor in Aldo's place, including Frankie Edgar, Nate Diaz and current back-up plan Chad Mendes.
As for McGregor, he took a jab at Aldo via Twitter once he learned of the UFC's announcement.
It turned out he just had a little period pain.

UFC 189 is scheduled to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and also features a welterweight title fight between champion Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald.
