Julianne Moore shares two kids with her husband, director Bart Freundlich

Julianne Moore balances her acting career with parenting her two kids, Caleb Moore Freundlich and Liv Helen Moore Freundlich.

The May December actress met her husband, Bart Freundlich, when he was directing her film The Myth of Fingerprints in 1996. The couple welcomed Caleb in 1997 and Liv in 2002 — what she called “the happiest days of my life” — before getting married in 2003.

And while Moore continued making time for her career she also maintained flexibility in her work to accommodate her family’s schedule.

“I can't go to Europe for four months during the school year,” she told The Guardian in 2010. “Just like every other working parent I'm trying to figure out: 'How do I work, how am I available for soccer games, how can I make sure that I'm home when everybody's doing their homework?' So if I come to do press in London, I come for two days, and I get right back home."

These days, both of Moore’s kids are all grown up, with Cal working as a musician and Liv attending college. Still, she always puts them first. “My family makes me most happy,” Moore told PEOPLE. “It would be miserable without them.”

Caleb Moore Freundlich, 26

Moore and Bart welcomed their first child, Caleb, on Dec. 4, 1997. Their firstborn took an interest in music at a very young age.

“It definitely all started with my parents,” he told Shoutout LA in 2022. “They always wished they could play an instrument and so they were adamant on me learning one when I was young. They were supportive no matter how it sounded.”

His music took a backseat in high school as he focused on playing basketball, which earned him a spot on the team at Davidson College from 2016 to 2020, according to his website.

Caleb graduated from the school amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “My son @cal_freundlich graduates from @davidsoncollege today,” the May December actress shared on Instagram in 2020. “We could not be prouder of everything he has accomplished these last 4 years —  graduating with honors , playing for @davidsonbasketball and getting into grad school... We love you so much Cal and we are SO PROUD.”

The budding musician went on to earn a master’s degree in music from NYU Steinhardt, and now works as a musician and adjunct professor teaching Music Production for Animation at the Fashion Institute of Technology, according to his LinkedIn.

Caleb's website explains that he has written “music for a wide variety of projects, from Documentary and Narrative films, to animations, video games and even web-comics.” In March 2024, he announced his first solo performance on Instagram.

When it comes to his romantic life, Caleb is not shy about sharing his love for his longtime girlfriend, Kibriyaá, on Instagram. Moore has also shared her affection for her son’s partner on social media. “Happy birthday beauty, we love you❤️” she wrote alongside a sweet selfie with the duo in April 2024.

Caleb has a very close relationship with his mom. For Mother’s Day 2020, he shared a touching tribute to her with a throwback photo of them enjoying a Knicks game courtside and a cute video of them dancing together. “Last pick in gym class, first pick in our hearts,” he wrote, jokingly. “Happy Mama’s Day to the greatest to ever do it.”

Liv Helen Moore Freundlich, 21

Moore and Bart completed their family with the birth of their daughter, Liv, on April 11, 2002. "I always tell my little girl that I can remember lying in the bathtub when I was pregnant," Moore told The Guardian in 2008. "I say I wished and wished for a girl and got her."

At a young age, Liv followed her mom into the entertainment business and had roles in The Rebound (2009) and Trust the Man (2005).

Moore is protective of her daughter, who was 12 when the Sandy Hook school shooting happened. After the day's events, Liv inspired Moore to get involved with gun control activism.

“I was so careful that day to keep the news away from her,” she explained to PEOPLE in 2018. “My idea was I was trying to protect my child.” However, Liv heard the news anyway. “I was absolutely devastated. That was the moment when I realized ... that if I didn’t do something about gun violence, then I wasn’t being a responsible parent.”

Moore took a leadership role on the creative council of Everytown for Gun Safety and Liv was inspired to join the branch Students Demand Action.

“My mom created a path for me to build my confidence and join the movement,” Liv told PEOPLE. “Watching her do this work since I was really little makes me really proud.” Both children joined their parents at a gun reform rally in Washington, D.C., in 2018.

Liv graduated from high school in 2020, and Moore was thrilled about her milestone achievement. “We are so proud of everything she is and everything she has accomplished,” the Boogie Nights star wrote on Instagram. “She is smart and brave and kind, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.”

Liv now attends Northwestern University, per her LinkedIn, and occasionally accompanies her mom to events. She also made her modeling debut for J.Crew in 2017 and starred in a campaign for Hourglass cosmetics with Moore in 2022. “My girl, beautiful inside and out,” the actress wrote alongside a photo for another mother-daughter campaign, this time for jewelry brand Bvlgari.

The Dear Evan Hansen star is head over heels for her mini-me. "I've been bragging about Liv since the day she was born, and I'm so impressed by how well she navigates the world and how mature she is,” Moore told Harper’s Bazaar in 2022 as part of their Bvlgari partnership.

When she turned 21 in 2023, Moore shared further about Liv's personality.

"Happy happy birthday to my beautiful, thoughtful, kind, intelligent, insightful 21 year old daughter!!!" she wrote on Instagram. "You are a gift each and every day. I am so grateful to be your mother.”
