Keep or sell? Every Liverpool player rated as Arne Slot faces Luis Diaz and midfield decisions

Liverpool shouldn't need radical changes in the transfer market this summer.

The base level that already exists at Anfield is relatively high and Jurgen Klopp departed in rare circumstances: with his side still on the up. Nevertheless, there are ways that Arne Slot can improve the team further. A center-back signing feels like a must this summer and another forward would be ideal; meanwhile, a world-class holding midfielder would be excellent if such a player exists on the market.

In terms of signings, though, much will depend on outgoings in the sense of freeing up space and dictating what the most urgent requirements are. With that in mind, Liverpool.com has run the rule of the existing squad to see who could be let go either on loan or permanently.

Goalkeepers

Despite there being interest from Saudi Arabia in Alisson Becker, the Brazilian will not be departing. Meanwhile, Liverpool should be doing absolutely everything it can to keep Caoimhin Kelleher.

The pair are as good as it gets when it comes to goalkeeping departments: the best in the world and the best second choice in the world, as Klopp once put it. If Slot can persuade Kelleher to stay, that would be an enormous boost as signing a replacement will be near-impossible.

Defense

The only player in the defense around which there should be a conversation is Kostas Tsimikas. For much of last season, he was the third choice at left-back because he was overtaken by Joe Gomez in the pecking order. If the Greek star wants more minutes, he will have to go elsewhere.

Beyond that, though, Liverpool can't afford to lose any more bodies. Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold need new contracts, but there should be more depth added in this area rather than any more taken away after the exit of Joel Matip.

Midfield

Similar to the defense, there is only an argument for adding more bodies rather than losing anyone. Adding another number six would be ideal but Stefan Bajcetic should not be forgotten. An improvement from Dominik Szoboszlai can be expected while Harvey Elliott will hope to kick on again.

The big midfield question is whether Slot wants to play with a double or a single pivot. The latter would make more sense given the structure of the squad that he inherits and he has played that kind of system before. Bobby Clark might need to head out on loan to get the regular senior minutes he needs to best serve his development.

Attack

This is where is gets interesting. There is a legitimate argument for selling any of the Liverpool forwards, you could say. Luis Diaz is the smallest goal threat so if Barcelona was to put a big enough offer on the table, the Reds should consider it. It would be possible to find a younger version, though it wouldn't be cheap.

Darwin Nunez needs to kick on quickly to avoid being an inconsistent striker who misses more chances than he scores but the Uruguayan won't be going anywhere. The hope is that it clicks for him but there might be more of a conversation to be had about cashing in during 2025 if his output doesn't improve.

Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah are both clinical but each comes with issues. Jota is injured too often and misses too many games while Salah is inside the final year of his contract and is now 32. For either, a mega offer would need to be considered but the chances of one arriving are slim.

The ideal scenario would be that Liverpool added a sixth senior forward to its attack, with that player being right-sided to share minutes with Salah. That would leave Diaz and Cody Gakpo for the left, Jota and Nunez for the middle, and then Salah and a new option for the right.

If Diaz was to leave, another left-sided forward would need to be brought in as well. The Colombian feels like the most likely to be sold right now, but that is far from a guarantee. As it stands, the Reds are planning on him staying put.
