Kelvin Gastelum Admits Ballooning 40 to 50 Pounds Above His Weight Class

After The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum failed to make weight for the third time as a welterweight at UFC 205 in New York, he was removed from the fight card. UFC president Dana White said that the fight promotion would no longer book Gastelum for 170-pound bouts.

Gastelum fought as a middleweight on Saturday on the UFC 206 main card in Toronto. He dominated veteran Tim Kennedy and announced that he'd like to give welterweight another try during his post-fight interview.

The 25-year-old has a 13-2 professional record. He's unbeaten at middleweight, but believes that welterweight is where he should be competing.

“I think if I’m offered a fight that interests me at 185, I don’t see why I wouldn’t stay here. But I think 170 is my optimal weight class,” Gastelum said during the event's post-fight press conference.

“I feel like 170 is my optimal weight class. My height and my reach are at a disadvantage at 185. These guys are over six-feet tall and have a major height and reach advantage over me, so I feel like 170 is where my body type fits best,” he explained.

Gestelum doesn't maintain a strict diet when he doesn't have a fight booked, sometimes ballooning up to 220 pounds.

“Outside of camp, I blow up too much. I go 40 to 50 pounds above my weight class,” he said backstage after Saturday's event.

“I get too heavy outside of camp, and that’s my problem,” he said. “And it shouldn’t be that way. My whole camp is concentrated on losing the weight that I gained outside of camp. It shouldn’t be that way.

“I was able to get away with it my last few fights, but the older I get the harder it is to cut the weight. I think if I change my lifestyle up a bit and create a better lifestyle where I’m at a better weight outside of training camp, I think it would be a better fit.”
