Surrey have announced the signing of West Indies quick Kemar Roach as their second overseas player for the first seven matches of the County Championship season.

Roach joins Hashim Amla – whose registration at the county has changed from Kolpak to overseas – at the Kia Oval, and will help bolster Surrey’s seam-bowling stocks while the Curran brothers are at the IPL.

Surrey have also picked up Jamie Overton and Reece Topley in that department in recent times, but Morne Morkel’s three-year stint at the club ended last year.

Roach, 32, brings 205 Test wickets in 61 matches worth of experience. He will travel to England at the conclusion of the Windies’ two-Test series in Sri Lanka and, pending further Covid restrictions and quarantine rules, will be available for Surrey’s opening Championship match in Bristol on April 8.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be joining Surrey for the early part of the summer,” said Roach. “Two grounds I wanted to play at as a kid were the two Ovals, Kensington and The Oval, home of Surrey.

"When Alec Stewart showed an interest in me I had no hesitation in saying yes to him.”

Director of Cricket Stewart said he had brought in "a highly-skilled bowler who we feel will suit the conditions of the early part of the English domestic season”.
