Khabib Nurmagomedov Holds a Win Over Current UFC Champ, Wants His Belt

Khabib Nurmagomedov Crowned Lightweight Champion with Lopsided Win Over Al Iaquinta at UFC 223

After spending the past two years nursing injuries, sitting on the sidelines, watching the man he last defeated become champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov finally returned to the Octagon at UFC on FOX 19 on Saturday night in Florida.

Facing a late replacement and UFC newcomer – not to mention that the Russian fighter is one of the best lightweight fighters in the world – it wasn’t at all surprising that he finished Darrell Horcher in the second round and then immediately took aim at the title.

“I feel like the last two years, I sit down in the jail. Now I’m free. Now I’m ready for the title,” Nurmagomedov said at the UFC on FOX 19 post-fight press conference.

The title is currently wrapped around the waist of Rafael dos Anjos, whom Nurmagomedov defeated via unanimous decision almost two years ago to the day of his fight with Horcher.

He wants to fight that fight again, only this time with the belt on the line.

Although dos Anjos is currently slated to defend the belt against Eddie Alvarez on July 7, that’s okay with Nurmagomedov. After two years on the sidelines, he’s willing to wait a few months before he fights again.

A devout Sunni Muslim, Nurmagomedov observes the Ramadam holiday, which begins in June. He also wants to give his body some much needed rest after his recent training camp lasted nearly 100 days.

“After two years (without a fight), six months is nothing for me,” he said on Saturday night. “I feel my body needs rest and June beginning Ramadan, I want to rest a little bit and come back September, October. I think if UFC wants to make very smart decision for New York – New York, living (there are) a couple million people who speak Russian – I can fight in New York.”

The when and the where are negotiable. The one variable that Nurmagomedov seemed set on was dos Anjos. After all, the current champion doesn’t like the idea of having a loss to Nurmagomedov on his record and wants another fight with the Russian, as well.

Nurmagomedov would like nothing better than to oblige him.

“I saw Rafael dos Anjos call me out. I finish my business. You talk about let’s finish this business,” the undefeated Russian declared. “Two years ago in Florida, I finish this business. I beat you, like, unanimous decision. Let’s go finish this business.”

For now, Nurmagomedov will take his unblemished record home to rest, and wait for the smoke to clear on the lightweight title. But with the Eagle’s wings fully restored, don’t expect him to be out of sight for two years this time.
