Kieran Trippier leaves Tottenham for Atletico Madrid in £20m transfer on three-year contract

Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier has joined Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £20 million plus add-ons.

The England international, who arrived in north London from Burnley for £5m four years ago, has penned a three-year contract with the Liga giants.

The 28-year-old became Spurs' first-choice right-back under Mauricio Pochettino after Kyle Walker's departure to Manchester City in 2017 and made 38 appearances in all competitions last season.

He also featured heavily for England at the World Cup in Russia last year, scoring against Croatia in the semi-final. But his form nosedived following the tournament, leading to questions over his long-term future in north London.

Despite Trippier's departure, Tottenham are unlikely to sign a replacement.

Spurs are also open to offers for Serge Aurier, their other senior right-back, but the Ivorian is expected to stay and compete for a starting place with Kyle Walker-Peters and Juan Foyth.

Walker-Peters, 22, has made just nine starts in the previous two seasons but Spurs turned down approaches from Crystal Palace and German club RB Leipzig this summer, and boss Mauricio Pochettino wants him to challenge to be first-choice right-back this season.

Spurs admire Norwich's Max Aarons but do not see value in the Canaries' asking price of more than £20m for the 19-year-old and they are not planning, as it stands, to sign another right-back unless a suitable player becomes available later in the window.

Foyth was moved from centre-half to full-back by Pochettino towards the end of last season and is also expected to be given the chance to nail down Trippier's spot.
