Knee Injury Forces Bellator 138 Featherweight Championship Change

Bellator featherweight title challenger Georgi Karakhanyan suffered a knee injury that has forced him out of his title bid against Patricio “Pitbull” Freire.

Daniel Weichel has stepped up to take his place in the Bellator 138 co-main event. Promotion officials announced the change on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Pitbull (23-2) is a 13-time veteran of the promotion, who captured the Bellator featherweight title with a September win over then-champion Pat Curran. He then defended his belt in January with a submission win over former champion Daniel Straus.

Weichel (35-8) is 12-1 in his past 13 fights, including winning the final Bellator featherweight tournament and then defeating Curran. He had been awaiting a title shot, but now gets his opportunity a little sooner than he expected.
