Kompany keen to use Forest celebrations as fuel for next season

Vincent Kompany wants his Burnley side to use Nottingham Forest's celebrations at Turf Moor for motivation as they aim to make an immediate return to the Premier League next season.

Forest ran out 2-1 winners in East Lancashire on the final day after a first-half brace from former Claret Chris Wood.

Burnley's relegation had already been confirmed after their defeat at Tottenham by the same scoreline last weekend.

Kompany spoke to the full squad and staff in a huddle after the final whistle before going to acknowledge the fans. When asked what had been the message, he replied: “It’s quite easy. You have a team that has every right to celebrate, celebrating with their own fans on your pitch.

"We know the feeling of celebrating at Turf Moor and this for us, for next season, has to be the main message."

Both of Wood's goals came in the opening 15 minutes as the visitors seized control of the contest. First he slotted home Anthony Elanga's cross at the far post and then got half a toe on Ryan Yates' strike to put it beyond the reach of Aro Muric.

The second goal was initially chalked off for an offside but eventually stood following a lengthy VAR break.

Kompany added: “I think the emotions were there at the start of the game. I felt like we had every intention to win the game and give it everything we’ve got, and we got punished in two moments and you wonder what type of day it’s going to be.

“The team kept pushing and we gave ourselves a chance to be in the game and maybe get a result.”
