Kylian Mbappe is set to surpass football icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic in terms of net worth after securing a lucrative deal with Spanish titans Real Madrid.

The French national team captain and World Cup victor has transferred from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid, ending years of speculation. The 25-year-old had previously confirmed he would not be renewing his contract with PSG after this season, sparking rumors of a move to the Champions League victors.

While there have long been rumors he could become a Liverpool player, that never looked a serious option. In reality, the Reds could not compete with the financial firepower offered elsewhere - and his new deal sums that up.

Insiders told ESPN that the striker has been given a staggering $161 million (£127m/€150m) signing on fee, spread over his five-year contract, in addition to his annual post-tax earnings of around $15 million (£12m/€14m). This sum propels Mbappe past his former PSG, Manchester United and Barcelona teammate Zlatan, in terms of net worth.

Celebrity Net Worth reports that the French forward's worth is currently at $179 million (£141m/€167m), with an annual salary of $52 million (£41m/€48.6m). That means he is among the richest soccer players in the world as he prepares to to and lead France to glory at Euro 2024.

Adding Mbappe's contract to his signing on fee totals an enormous $340 million £268million (£268m/€317.5m). In comparison, Zlatan, who retired from playing in 2023, is estimated to be worth around $189 million (£149m/€176.6m), allowing his French counterpart to comfortably surpass him in the net worth rankings.

Since retiring, the Swedish athlete has kept himself occupied, joining RedBird Capital Partners as an Operating Partner in December. He now serves as a senior advisor to AC Milan Ownership and Senior Management.

He expressed at the time: "This is not a decision that I take lightly - it is one which is very important and personal to me and my family. I've thought long and hard about the first steps in my post-playing career and I couldn't be more thrilled to start that journey as a member of RedBird and AC Milan

.In other news, Mbappe is settling into his new environment after making the move to Real Madrid. Sharing his excitement on Instagram, he said: "Nobody can understand how excited I am right now! A dream come true. So happy and proud to join the club of my dreams.".

The international sensation joins a Madrid team still basking in the glory of their recent Champions League victory, their record 15th win, against Borussia Dortmund. In the meantime, he will have a big summer with the national team in Germany.
