Euro 2024 gets under way on Friday night with hosts Germany taking on Scotland in the opening match. A month-long summer of football is upon us, with England one of the favourites to win the tournament for the first time.

Gareth Southgate has a wealth of attacking talent at his disposal, although there are question marks over the Three Lions' defence with Harry Maguire not part of the squad due to injury and Luke Shaw unlikely to be fit until the later stages of the tournament.

In midfield and up front, however, England fans will be hoping they have the firepower to take them all the way. Although France, Germany, Portugal and the like may have something to say about that.

When it comes to the most valuable players at the tournament though, England have a strong contingent of players, highlighting that attacking prowess. We used the CIES Football Observatory value tool to see what was the most expensive starting XI in the tournament.

Goalkeeper - Gregor Kobel

The Swiss keeper has the highest value of any goalkeeper in the world right now. The 26-year-old Borussia Dortmund shot-stopped has a market value of €66.3million (£55.7million), just higher than Ukraine's Anatoliy Trubin.

Right-back - Jeremie Frimpong

The full-back enjoyed an excellent season unbeaten with Bayer Leverkusen and it's little surprise he makes the list with a value of €97.8million (£82.2million). We are playing a little hard and loose with the rules here, given he's been playing as an attacking wing-back and is named as a forward in the Netherlands squad list!

Centre-back - Antonio Silva

The Benfica centre-back is valued at €102million (£85.7million) making him the second most valuable centre-back in the list, just behind...

Centre-back - William Saliba

The Arsenal man who struggles to even get in the France starting XI such is their plethora of talent. Saliba is valued at €105.2million (£88.4million) and has certainly proved that for Arsenal.

Left-back - Josko Gvardiol

Croatia have a tough group alongside Spain and reigning champions Italy, but they have the capacity to do well, particularly with the group of players they've got Gvardiol makes this list with a value of €115million (£96.6million).

Midfield - Jude Bellingham

What more needs to be said about this English talent? He is the most valuable player on the planet, according to CIES, with a value of €280.4million (£235.5million). That may well change though, for reasons we will explain later...

Midfield - Florian Wirtz

We're going attacking with this team. We could play two defensive midfielders, but that would miss out some very expensive players, so we've put Wirtz in too, with the Bayer Leverkusen man valued at €133.8million (£112.4million).

Midfield - Eduardo Camavinga

Here's our defensive midfielder. Coming in at €112.5million (£94.5million), he gets in ahead of more attack minded players like Jamal Musiala and Cole Palmer, who are valued slightly higher.

Forward - Phil Foden

Another Englishman, Foden is ranked as the fifth most valuable player in the world at €203.8million (£171.2million). After another stunning season with Man City it's not hard to see why.

Forward - Bukayo Saka

The second Arsenal man on the list, Saka is currently the sixth-most valuable player in the world according to CIES with a value of €195.2million (£164million).

Striker - Kylian Mbappe

This is where we play hard and loose with the rules again. The CIES values have not been updated since the end of May and Mbappe signed for Real Madrid at the start of June. Given his PSG contract was up, Mbappe was not valued particularly highly, naturally as a free agent. Now though, he is sure to be towards the top of this list and he gets on because we know the new values will see him at the top. Were we to go with the standings as they are on CIES, there would be something of a surprise up front - Rasmus Hojlund!
