France will face a nervy wait to find out the extent of Kylian Mbappe's injury after he was forced off late on in Didier Deschamps' Euro 2024 opener against Austria. Having crossed in for Maximilian Wober's first-half own goal, Mbappe remained at the centre of the story after the break.

Not only did the new Real Madrid man miss a glaring chance to double the lead for his side, he was then booked after attempting to waste time following a serious nosebleed. Mbappe was taken off by Deschamps with 10 minutes of normal time left but picked up a yellow card for walking back onto the pitch and then sitting down in order to get a stoppage in play with his team down to 10 men without him and holding out.

It will now wait and be seen how well he can continue after such a nasty injury that left blood pouring down his face. France don't play again until Friday and their enormous clash with Holland.

Both sides are primed to go through to the knockout stages already following nervy wins in round one of the groups. Ronald Koeman's side edged past Poland on Sunday afternoon thanks to a late Wout Wehorst goal, meanwhile France were run close by Ralph Ragnick's Austria.

With three points expected to be enough to ensure progression to the last 16 due to the four best-ranked third-place sides getting a spot, anything but a major drop-off from here is likely to be enough. Both the Netherlands and France will be keen to secure top spot in Group D though in order to get a favourable route onwards.

France's chances of going deep into the tournament will hinge partially on Mbappe, and therefore how he recovers will be a point for all teams to monitor. England could meet the 2018 World Cup winners in the semi-finals if both teams progress through.

Should Mbappe's nose be broken, as it looks be, then it will put his participation in the short term immediately in doubt. A concussion would rule him out of the Holland clash and leave him in doubt for the Poland game four days later.
