Lady Alice Bowling Club throws fantastic opening day to kick off new season

LADY Alice Bowling Club threw a fantastic opening day to kick off their new season.

A spell of bad weather did little to dampen the spirits of club members and gathered guests as the greens opened for 2024.

President Shaun Griffin got proceedings underway as his partner Erin threw the first bowl of 2024.

After a bout of bad weather, the skies cleared long enough for the attendees to play a few ends on the greens before heading inside for refreshments.

Club match secretary Peter Boyle told the Tele: “It was a blustery old day, we managed to get on the bowling green even though it was pouring at the start.

“But the weather broke for us, and we got an hour and a half of playing bowls before we called time and went in to watch the Grand National.

“There was a big crowd there from Rothesay and we’ll be sending a group over to them for their opening day this weekend, as they helped make the day.

“Most members made an appearance, I would say 95 per cent of our members come out on opening day.”

The club is expecting a busy season, with a whole host of competitive fixtures and social functions lining the calendar.

Peter added: “Shaun is the Lady Alice president this year and his brother, Scott, is the Greenock and District President, which means all the major district finals will be played at Lady Alice this year.

“It’s going to be a really busy season.

“I’m marking up our calendar bowling-wise and social-wise and I’ve never known a calendar to be so packed.

“We’ve got Scottish championships, Renfrewshire championships and Greenock and District championships which will all hit us at the start of May.

“It’s looking really good.

“The Greenock and District finals day is on August 24 is the culmination of Greenock and District bowling, we’ll have that full day with the semi-finals and finals.

“It’ll be a good day, hopefully we get good weather and as many of our own members playing as possible.

“It’s a great honour to play in that competition, especially on your own green.”

The club will also be running its usual come and try sessions throughout the season and are continuing to encourage youngsters to come along to their junior section on a Saturday morning.
