England have been dealt a huge blow ahead of their Euro 2024 opener with Manchester City defender John Stones a doubt.

The Three Lions kickstart their European Championship campaign against Serbia at Gelsenkirchen on Sunday and are one of the favourites to win the tournament. This is despite winning just one of their last five matches, with the only victory in that run coming over Bosnia and Herzegovina last Monday.

Losing 1-0 against Iceland in their final friendly before the Euros has made some fans lose hope, but Gareth Southgate's side remain among the teams tipped for glory. It comes three years since the Three Lions lost the Euro 2020 final to Italy on penalties at Wembley.

Preparations for the tournament has not been ideal with a number of key players struggling with injuries and fitness related concerns. City centre-back Stones is someone who might not feature in their Group C opener. Sky Sports have reported that Stones has a sickness bug that kept him out of England training on Wednesday. He has instead been confined to his bed to avoid spreading around the camp.

Stones trained with the England squad on Tuesday after appearing to injure his ankle against Iceland, but the former Barnsley defender is now nursing an illness which has put his availability in doubt for the clash with Serbia. Stones has started just one Premier League game since March and needed game and training time in order to get back to fitness, but he might not even take part entirely in their tournament opener.

Marc Guehi took a whack to the head during the friendly with Iceland, sparking potential concussion fears but the Crystal Palace centre-back has trained over the past couple of days. Guehi is in line to start for England against Serbia, with Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa pushing to start.

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw took part in team training for the first time on Tuesday and is building up his fitness ahead of a potential return. Shaw is not expected to start against Serbia, however, with the second group fixture against Denmark a realistic return date for the Manchester United defender.

Bukayo Saka has missed multiple training sessions since joining the England camp but Southgate is confident that the Arsenal winger will be fit to face Serbia.

Other than Stones, every other England player took part in training on Wednesday.
