Laurel County Schools establishing Alumni Hall of Fame

Feb. 16—Remember all those high school "heroes"?

The athletes who scored the winning point, or the cheerleader that managed to keep the crowd going, or the student that maintained perfect attendance throughout school? Remember the classmate that always helped others and dedicated their life to that purpose, whether through medical, social work, education, business or other fields?

Now those people can be forever memorialized as the Laurel County School System announced the establishment of the Laurel County Schools Alumni Hall of Fame.

Superintendent Denise Griebel made the announcement to school board members during Monday's bi-monthly meeting and outlined the qualifications for the recognition.

"The nominee must have graduated from a current or former Laurel County High School," she said, reflecting back on the county's four former high schools of Bush, Hazel Green, London and Lily.

"Or from Laurel County or North or South Laurel, who have graduated at least 10 years before the nomination," she added.

The criteria for nominations include:

1. Be an exemplary role model for others exhibiting a high degree of character and integrity.

2. Be able to be identified as an outstanding member of his/his profession.

3. Have provided a meaningful contribution to the service of others in support of public education, student literacy, student well-being, or in his or her chosen field and professional leadership.

4. Continue to emphasize and demonstrate life-long learning through outstanding contributions in their field of employment with impact of their industry or community.

"Nominations are being taken through this month," Griebel said. "A poster with a photo and brief biography will be displayed in the G.C. Garland Building. The honorees will also be featured in a publication on the school district's website and Facebook page and will be recognized during a Laurel County Board of Education meeting. So let's get some nominations in for our inaugural class!"

The information for nominees can also be found by visiting their website — Laurel County Public Schools — or on their Facebook page.
