Leeds 3-0 Chelsea FC LIVE! Premier League result, match stream, latest reaction and updates today

Leeds vs Chelsea - LIVE!

Edouard Mendy had a disastrous moment in goal for Chelsea as they fell to a dreadful 3-0 defeat against Leeds at Elland Road. The goalkeeper was caught on the ball by Brenden Aaronson as the Leeds man was gifted the simplest of finishes, before Rodrigo quickly brought up his fourth goal of the season.

The Blues had the occasional dangerous moment in their bid to halve the deficit, but Jack Harrison made sure of the result with 20 minutes remaining as he finished from close range. Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off late on to cap a truly woeful afternoon for the visitors.

After last week’s disappointment for Chelsea, conceding a last-minute equaliser against Tottenham, this was their first defeat of the campaign and came in particularly worrying fashion for Thomas Tuchel, who will be hoping that a busy end to the transfer window can give the club a significant boost.

Big problems for Chelsea

17:11 , Matt Verri

Chelsea’s double substitution in the 64th minute summed up their problems in their 3-0 home defeat to Leeds, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

Conor Gallagher and Jorginho came off for Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic. The two players who are hoping to leave Chelsea before the transfer deadline on September 1 had to try to save the day.

Still, Thomas Tuchel had to act, with N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic injured, as his midfield duo ended the first half with just 75 percent possession and bereft of confidence.

They couldn’t play out of Leeds’s press, with Chelsea physically bullied by their opponents all over the pitch at Elland Road.

More from Tuchel

Jesse Marsch’s reaction...

16:32 , Matt Verri

“It was a complete performance. We had a few different plans on what they [Chelsea] would look like and the guys did a good job of adjusting. We wanted to play with aggression but controlled and we accomplished our goals.

“From the first moment I came here I saw this was a special team. This [win] should mean hunger for us to want to improve.

“Our goal is never to be out-run or out-worked but also to add to not being out-fought and if we can add these things together we can build something. You can see it coming together almost right before our eyes. It’s a good sign but there’s still so much more to do.”

Tuchel not impressed

Match to forget for Mendy

16:13 , Matt Verri

Edouard Mendy - 3

“With Aaronson bearing down on him, Edouard Mendy attempted a Cruyff turn on the edge of his six-yard box. Unfortunately, his first touch before the action was sloppy, allowing the United States international to steal the ball and score. From there, the game turned sour for his side.”

Spirits high in the Leeds camp!

Leeds wanted it more?

15:58 , Matt Verri

“It shows you who wants it more.”

Brenden Aaronson believes Leeds showed they were just more up for it Chelsea this afternoon, as he gives his post-match interview.

Hard to argue really.

How Harrison sealed victory...

FT: Leeds 3-0 Chelsea

15:51 , Matt Verri

Leeds sensational, Chelsea woeful.

Memorable afternoon for the hosts as they blow Chelsea away, with pretty much everything going wrong for the visitors.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

15:50 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Tuchel now being held back by one of his coaching staff, as he loses it at the fourth official. Could do without another red card, Thomas...

15:49 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Three minutes added on. Leeds fans can enjoy every second.

Gelhardt a bit too keen to enjoy them, as he bundles into Loftus-Cheek and concedes the foul.

15:46 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Azpilicueta replaces Sterling for the final few minutes. Lucky man.

Both sides would be more than happy if this match just ended now.

RED CARD!

15:43 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Things can always get worse!

Koulibaly with a ridiculous decision considering the circumstances. Match already gone, but Koulibaly decides to drag Gelhardt down off the ball anyway.

Second yellow card - Tuchel doesn’t even look at him.

15:41 , Matt Verri

82 mins: If anything has ever summed up a football match.

Ziyech with a brilliant strike from outside the box, hammers into Havertz who is left in a heap on the floor. Ball drops for Sterling, who can’t finish with only Meslier to beat. That miss doesn’t matter though, offside flag is up.

Harrison, Rodrigo and Aaronson off for Leeds. Greenwood, Gelhardt and Klich introduced.

15:39 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Chelsea having all of the ball but doing exactly nothing with it. They know this match has long gone.

Leeds look to have given up on any further goals too, content to just sit back and see the rest of this match out.

15:36 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Chilwell on for Mount, for the final 13 minutes or so. Not exactly a straight swap.

Looks like Cucurella will be on the left of a back three, with Chilwell further ahead at wing-back.

15:33 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Aaronson will not stop running. Nutmegs Koulibaly but the Chelsea centre-back just about gets back to reclaim possession.

Think Aaronson might have been sent 20 feet into the air otherwise.

15:30 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Some stunned faces in the away end.

It almost gets worse for them, as Leeds carve the Chelsea defence open. Harrison plays it across the face of goal, Rodrigo on the stretch sends it over the bar.

GOAL! Leeds 3-0 Chelsea | Jack Harrison 69'

15:27 , Matt Verri

THAT SHOULD BE THAT!

Chelsea leaving lots of space at the back and Leeds take full advantage.

James in behind on the left wing, clips the ball into the box. Rodrigo on the stretch knocks it into the path of Harrison and he fires it into the back of the net.

15:25 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Silva concedes a cheap corner, which it’s fair to say Leeds are in absolutely no rush to take.

Sterling picks the loose ball up and drives at Adams, knocks the ball past him and goes down. Not getting a free-kick for that.

15:23 , Matt Verri

65 mins: James with a good effort from distance, tipped behind by Meslier.

Corner swung in deep, Koulibaly is there at the back post but he can only loop a header straight at the Leeds goalkeeepr.

15:22 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Not happening for Chelsea, after what was a bright start to the second-half.

And Tuchel has seen enough. Pulisic and Ziyech introduced, Gallagher and Jorginho off.

15:19 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Roca replaced by Forshaw for Leeds, some fresh legs in midfield.

No sign of any changes from Chelsea, Tuchel not yet turning to his bench. Can’t be too long.

15:18 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Outrageous from Harrison - falls over, spins and still beats two Chelsea defenders.

Hosts opts to slow things down, content to just keep possession. No need for them to force things now.

15:15 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Really good from Loftus-Cheek. James breaking away down the right, plays the ball in and Harrison briefly looks to be free at the back post, but the Chelsea man gets back to turn it behind for a corner.

Cleared out to Adams 35 yards out, who hammers it at goal. Blocked. Not sure hammers does it justice either.

Chelsea try to break, poor pass from Gallagher though and the move breaks down.

15:13 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Aaronson has space on the edge of the Chelsea box, can’t pull off the pass though.

Leeds still looking to counter when they can, carrying a threat.

15:10 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Gallagher has never been so happy to see an offside flag.

Ball drops to him in the box, completely free six yards out. Fires straight at Meslier, before the flag goes up.

Not sure he actually was offside thouhg, may well have counted had he scored.

15:09 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Corner swung into the Chelsea box and after a game of head tennis, the visitors get it clear.

In fact they do more than that, really dangerous break. Two-on-two, Sterling finds Mount and his shot is blocked.

Chelsea then want a free-kick for a foul on Cucurella - instead the offside flag goes up.

Nizaar Kinsella at Elland Road

15:07 , Matt Verri

Chelsea have been staggeringly poor at escaping Leeds’s intense pressing system.

Conor Gallagher and Jorginho had around 75 percent pass completion showing the midfield engine has not been working.

They’ve switched formation to a 4-3-3 to put an extra body in there and try and support the attack more with at least two goals needed.

Of course, Gallagher prefers playing as a no8 than a no6, based off his sensational performances last season at Crystal Palace

15:06 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Chelsea immediately on the front foot and they should really have equalised.

Ball falls for Mount in the box with his back to goal, should lay it off to Jorginho. Instead it’s to Cucurella who takes his time and then blasts an effort over the bar.

James at right-back, Loftus-Cheek into midfield

15:04 , Matt Verri

Back underway!

15:04 , Matt Verri

Can Leeds keep that first-half standard up? Time to find out!

Oh Mendy...

14:55 , Matt Verri

Sums it up...

14:52 , Matt Verri

HT: Leeds 2-0 Chelsea

14:48 , Matt Verri

What a half for Leeds.

They lead by two goals at the break thanks to goals from Aaronson and Rodrigo, the first with a major assist from Mendy.

Big team talk coming up for Tuchel.

(AFP via Getty Images)

14:47 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on at the end of the half.

Chelsea on the attack and seeing plenty of the ball - Leeds have dropped so deep just trying to see it through to the break.

14:45 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Back underway, Sterling runs at Koch and wins a corner for the visitors. Mount over to take - he’s barely had a touch other than that once decent shot.

Struijk heads it away well in his owen six-yard box.

14:43 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Nasty collision between Roca and Gallagher on the halfway line, Leeds man looks in a fair bit of pain.

We’ll have a break in play as he receives some treatment.

14:40 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Chelsea straight up the other end and they win a corner.

Drops for James in the box, who wastes no time in booting it right back up the pitch to Mendy. Big period coming between now and half-time.

Blues look dangerous. Loftus-Cheek cuts it back into the box, falls for Cucurella who is free but it’s a tame effort. Comfortably wide.

GOAL! Leeds 2-0 Chelsea | Rodrigo 37'

14:38 , Matt Verri

TWO FOR LEEDS!

And now real problems for Chelsea. It’s a brilliant set-piece, whopped into the box and Rodrigo is there at the near post to flick it into the far corner.

14:37 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Leeds showing no signs of slowing down after that goal, pushing Chelsea right back.

Sterling commits a foul 25 yards out, goes into the book and the hosts have a free-kick in a great position.

GOAL! Leeds 1-0 Chelsea | Brenden Aaronson 33'

14:34 , Matt Verri

MENDY WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!

Leeds take the lead and it’s an absolute shambles from Mendy.

Ball comes back to him and he has plenty of time to clear it. Instead he stands on the ball, waits for Aaronson and then tries to turn past him.

Leeds man robs him and walks it over the line.

14:33 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Captain’s privileges for Rodrigo, who is shooting whenever he can even vaguely see the goal.

Aaronson has been superb so far and it’s another lovely turn from him, before playing it in to Rodrigo. Strikes it straight at Mendy from a tight angle.

14:31 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Harrison skips past Silva as Leeds put a nice move together, but goes for an ambitious pass over the top for Rodrigo which he didn’t really need to do. Mendy off his line to claim.

Rodrigo is then screaming at the referee sconds later as he goes shoulder to shoulder with James. Free-kick given to Chelsea.

14:29 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Pace of the match has definitely slowed down after a frantic start.

That’s suiting Chelsea, who are seeing much more of the ball and taking control of proceedings now. Press not quite as effective from Leeds.

14:26 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Struijk has waited for his moment after that earlier hit from Loftus-Cheek, and now he’s got a bit of revenge.

Loftus-Cheek takes the ball with his back to goal and is duly clattered by the Leeds defender. 1-1.

14:23 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Big save from Meslier, as Chelsea burst into life on the counter.

Mount cuts inside onto his left foot, pulls the shot towards the near post and Meslier just about gets down in time to turn it behind.

Koch heads away the corner and Leeds can get out.

14:21 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Sharp from Rodrigo, who has three league goals already this season.

Ball bounces over the Chelsea defence and he’s in behind. No intention of looking up, goes for goal from a tight angle. Dragged well wide.

14:18 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Leeds passing the ball around confidently and they look really dangerous when the go forward, but still so vulnerable at the back. Sterling in particular getting lots of space.

It’s a risk Leeds are happy to take though.

GOOO... OFFSIDE!

14:16 , Matt Verri

Sterling has the ball in the net but the offside flag is up!

Cruel from the linesman. Waited for Sterling to bring it down, turn past a challenge and curl it brilliantly into the far corner, and then put the flag up.

Correct call to be fair.

14:13 , Matt Verri

12 mins: It is completely chaotic in midfield. So many bodies, all flying in at every opportunity.

Cucurella looks to play Havertz in down the left wing, went too early with the run though and he’s offside.

14:10 , Matt Verri

9 mins: That’s brilliant from Aaronson, turns past Koulibaly and the Chelsea centre-back is absolutely nowhere.

He decides to drag the Leeds man back and it’s as clear a yellow card as you’ll ever see. Positive start from the hosts.

14:08 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Loftus-Cheek clatters into Struijk as he arrives on the scene late. Leeds not impressed with that, no punishment beyond a free-kick though.

Leeds defender has the look of a man who has noted who did that.

14:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Really entertaining start to the match.

Gallagher has already got caught on the ball a couple of times, not quite up to speed yet. Allows Leeds to break, comes to Harrison and he curls an effort straight at Mendy.

Chelsea go up the other end, again get plenty of joy. Comes to Loftus-Cheek in the box, completely free. Takes far too long to shoot and when he eventually does, it’s blocked behind for a corner.

14:04 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Challenges flying in already, Adams slides in on Gallagher and it’s celebrated like a goal. Nobody getting any time on the ball.

Silva has seen enough and boots a loose ball high into the stands. File that under ‘no nonsense’.

14:02 , Matt Verri

1 mins: Chelsea should be in front with barely more than 30 seconds on the clock!

Gallagher slides Sterling in on the left wing and he has a crazy amount of space. Drifts onto his right foot, past a couple of challenges and curls an effort just wide of the far post. Huge chance.

KICK-OFF!

14:01 , Matt Verri

We are up and running at Elland Road!

Here we go!

13:57 , Matt Verri

Players are out onto the pitch at Elland Road. Great atmosphere as you’d expect.

Let’s see if Tuchel and Marsch are able to keep it friendly...

Managers speak ahead of kick-off

13:51 , Matt Verri

Big afternoon for Gallagher

13:47 , Matt Verri

Today is a huge day for Conor Gallagher, he makes his first start for Chelsea away at Leeds with N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic both currently injured, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

Thomas Tuchel could have played Cesar Azpilicueta in defence, moved Reece James to wing back and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the midfielder but has chosen to trust his 22-year-old.

It’s a vote of confidence with Gallagher gaining loan interest and weighing up how to play enough minutes to make England’s World Cup squad.

With his chance coming now, the Cobham graduate must take it and he could end up being a key player for his side if he does.

Transfer talk pushed to one side

13:39 , Matt Verri

Aubameyang, Gordon, Fofana... Maguire?!

Plenty of names linked with Chelsea as they look for a busy end to the transfer window.

Full focus is on matters on the pitch this afternoon tough. Leeds, and their fans, will be right up for this as ever.

Better day for James?

13:30 , Matt Verri

Last time these two sides met, at the end of last season, Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 win at Elland Road.

Dan James was shown a straight red after 24 minutes that day. Room for improvement.

Unbeaten so far this season...

13:21 , Matt Verri

Both sides have a win and a draw from their opening two matches of the campaign.

Leeds were very nearly relegated last season, but it’s been a confident start this time. Big test for them this afternoon though.

Tuchel in talks over new deal

13:14 , Matt Verri

Thomas Tuchel has revealed that he is negotiating a new Chelsea contract.

It is the latest example of the opinion of the new Boehly-Clearlake owners who have been backing their manager in the transfer market, spending upwards of £170million with more signings to come.

Tuchel signed a last extension shortly after winning the Champions League final in July 2021 and he could now extend his deal beyond 2024.

“There are talks,” Tuchel told reporters at Cobham Training Centre. “But I think given the situation where we come from, and where we are in the middle of the transfer period, I think it is the very best if I focus on my team and on sports and on being competitive.”

Loftus-Cheek starts again

13:07 , Matt Verri

Just the one change from both sides, as we covered a while ago. Gallagher replaces Kante in the Chelsea midfield, James in for Bamford for Leeds.

That means Loftus-Cheek keeps his place at wing-back for Chelsea, with James on the right of the three-man defence.

Not much love for Chelsea...

12:47 , Matt Verri

No surprise to see Manchester City as the strong favourites to win yet another Premier League title.

Liverpool their most likely challengers - can the two north London clubs get themselves anywhere near those two clubs?

Not many have faith in Chelsea to keep pace with City this season, it would appear.

Latest Premier League title odds:

Man City: 4/11

Liverpool: 5/1

Tottenham: 14/1

Marsch: Doesn’t seem right Tuchel is on touchline

12:42 , Matt Verri

One man who will not be thrilled to see Tuchel on the touchline? Jesse Marsch.

Speaking before Tuchel’s punishment was confirmed, the Leeds boss was less than impressed when he heard that the German could escape an immediate suspension for last week’s red card.

Marsch said: “He won’t be there, right? Are they saying he might be able to be on the bench?

“That doesn’t seem right does it? If you get a red card, you’re out of the match. I will be disappointed if they allow him to be on the bench.

“There is a simple rule in football. Whether it’s soccer or football, if you get a red card you can’t play the next match.”

Tuchel at Elland Road

12:32 , Matt Verri

Thomas Tuchel will be on the touchline this afternoon, despite receiving a one-match ban for his involvement in the ill-tempered scenes at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.

That punishment has been temporarily suspended, but will be served at some point in the future assuming any appeal is unsuccessful.

The Chelsea boss has also been fined £35,000 - that’s one expensive handshake.

Prediction

12:09 , Matt Verri

It’s been difficult to gauge just how good Chelsea are of late, though their performance last weekend was impressive.

For that reason, they look capable of edging what looks set to be a really competitive encounter.

Chelsea to win 2-1.

Chelsea missing three

12:01 , Alex Young

N'Golo Kante will miss out for Chelsea due to hamstring trouble that will keep him sidelined for several weeks.

Mateo Kovacic is also out of action with a knee problem, while Armando Broja has been ruled out due to a knock.

Christian Pulisic is carrying an Achilles complaint but Chelsea hope he will be fit enough to feature.

Leeds sweating on Bamford and Cooper

11:45 , Alex Young

Leeds pair Patrick Bamford and Liam Cooper both face late fitness tests.

Bamford was forced out of last week's 2-2 draw at Southampton due to a groin strain, while an Achilles problem has delayed skipper Cooper's start to the season.

Striker Joe Gelhardt is back in contention after missing out last week because of a dead leg, but Luke Ayling and Junior Firpo (both knee) are still one or two weeks away from a return to action.
