Lewis Hamilton believes he is the most relaxed he has been going into a championship fight, as he looks to claw back an eight-point deficit to Max Verstappen at this weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The Briton is bidding for a record eighth world title, while current championship leader Verstappen is targeting his first drivers’ crown.

Going into the penultimate race, Hamilton said: “I am more relaxed than I’ve ever been.

“I have been around a long time. I remember how it was with my first championship, even my second and third… the sleepless nights.

“Now I am a lot more sure about myself and have applied myself better than ever. I can’t change the past, all I can do is prepare 100 per cent for what’s ahead of me — and I am sure I have.”

Hamilton is bidding for a hat-trick of race wins, while Verstappen said his focus was simply on enjoying the rest of the season.

“It has been a great year for us,” said the Red Bull driver.

“We really turned it around well. I will try to keep enjoying myself in the last two races. It doesn’t matter where we end up. We have had a really good season.”
