Lewis Mayo Kilmarnock form warrants Scotland call up as Will Dennis addresses future

Lewis Mayo has been backed by Kilmarnock teammate Will Dennis to force his way into the Scotland set-up.

The centre-half, 24, has been a stalwart for his club this season under manager Derek McInnes as they sit fourth in the Premiership table. It's been an excellent campaign for the Rugby Park club who even managed to run Hearts close to become best of the rest, albeit the Jambos have essentially confirmed their spot. Mayo has managed 41 appearances for his club this term and teammate Dennis has been impressed by his pal's form and his talents at the back.

With Scotland's stars dropping like flies - as well as Euro 2024's plans to move squad numbers from 23 to 26, Dennis feels Mayo could be a dark horse for the competition as he's had a "tremendous" term.

"I'm going to back my team-mate. I think he can get in there," the Bournemouth loan goalie said.

"I think he's up to it, definitely. Again here, he was just solid. He's had a tremendous season and deserves everything that comes his way."

Dennis will depart Rugby Park in the summer to return to the Cherries but the stopper will discuss what's next for him when he gets there.

And, asked if European football at Killie could sway any decision, the Englishman admitted: "Of course. There's talks to be had and, hopefully, we can get that sorted. I hope so.

"I want to play the rest of the games, go back and talk to the club and see where I am at."
