How to get your live rugby league fix during the international break

THE first team may not be in action, but there are ways in which you can get your Warrington Wolves fix during the international break.

The scholarship and reserve teams are in action this week for those wanting to take in some live rugby league, while the Halliwell Jones Stadium will play host to some of the country’s finest young talent next week.

Outside of The Wire, there is also one of local rugby league’s signature events taking place this weekend as well as plenty of amateur rugby league action.

Here’s your guide to everything locally that will keep rugby league fans in the town engaged during the international break…

Warrington Wolves vs Hull FC, Scholarship match

Wednesday, June 26 at The Halliwell Jones Stadium – kick off 7pm

Wire’s under 16s are back in action tonight as they look to continue what has been a highly promising season for them.

They have won four of their five matches this season, including victories over neighbours Wigan Warriors and St Helens and an 84-0 thrashing of Castleford Tigers in their last outing.

This will be the team’s penultimate home fixture of the year, with their final match against Leeds Rhinos taking place on Wednesday, July 24, following a trip to Wakefield Trinity on July 10.

The game has been moved to The Halliwell Jones Stadium from Victoria Park. Entry to the game is free for 2024 season members.

Local bragging rights at stake

Warrington Wolves Reserves vs St Helens Reserves

Saturday, June 29 at The Halliwell Jones Stadium – kick off 12pm

Another chance to potentially see some stars of the future will come on Saturday in the reserves ‘derby’ against St Helens.

Warrington will be looking to follow up their victory over Salford Red Devils in their last fixture but face a Saints side who have won six of their seven reserves games this year.

Like the scholarship fixture, the match will now be played at The Halliwell Jones Stadium as opposed to Victoria Park and entry to the game is free for 2024 season members.

A staple of the local rugby league calendar

Crosfields ARLFC Armed Forces Weekend

Saturday, June 29 at Hood Lane Recreation Ground

Always one of the more popular events on the local rugby league calendar, Armed Forces Day at Hood Lane always attracts a big crowd.

Five matches will take place over the weekend in this free festival of rugby league and Armed Forces collaboration, starting with a clash between a Crosfields Legends side and the Army RL Masters team on Friday night, kick off 7.30pm.

Saturday’s action then gets underway at 11am with Armed Forces Masters vs Folly Lane Masters, followed by a Development team match between the Royal Marines and the Army at 11.30am.

Rugby league teams from the Mercian Regiment and the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment then take the field at 1.30pm before the main event – the annual Sephton Trophy clash between a Crosfields select side and the Army’s first team at 3.30pm.

In terms of other amateur rugby league action, Latchford Albion are due to visit Shevington Sharks in the North West Men’s League Premier Division on Friday evening, kick off 7.30pm.

Further down the NWML tiers, there are away fixtures for Burtonwood Bridge at Westhoughton Lions, Bank Quay Bulls at Blackpool Scorpions and Culcheth Eagles at Orrell St James A on Saturday afternoon. All of those matches kick off at 2.30pm.

Wire youngsters’ England chance on home soil

England Academy vs France under 19s

Tuesday, July 2 at The Halliwell Jones Stadium – kick off 7.30pm

A trio of Warrington Wolves youngsters could represent their country at their home ground on Tuesday.

Having made their Super League debuts this year, Arron Lindop and Cai Taylor-Wray could cap what has already been a memorable 2024 for them by turning out for Paul Anderson’s side against France at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

There is also a place in the squad for Cumbrian prop Tom McKinney, who has been tipped for a bright future within the club.

Admission to the game costs £5 for adults and £2 for concessions, while the game is also being streamed live on the RFL’s YouTube channel.
