It hasn't been an easy few months for Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai. After a searing start to life at Anfield, the Reds number eight picked up an injury and looked fatigued as his and his side's season tailed off.

Szoboszlai scored seven times for Liverpool during his first campaign but only three of those goals came in the Premier League. The hamstring issue that he picked up hampered his progress too.

At Euro 2024 so far, Szoboszlai has been frustrated, on the losing team twice despite Hungary being tipped by many as a dark horse for the competition. And the BBC commentary team picked up on that frustration during the match against host Germany.

"A yellow card is shown for kicking the ball away to Dominik Szoboszlai," Guy Mowbray said. "I don’t think the yellow card was for the challenge. I think it’s because Szoboszlai then just launched it."

Pundit and co-commentator Martin Keown responded: "You wonder whose time is he wasting there? It qualifies for a booking." Mowbray added: "He is tired and fed up, I should think."

It would be fair to say that Szoboszlai needs a reset and probably a holiday after a long debut season in the Premier League. But judging him for his performance against Germany would be harsh.

For Hungary, the Liverpool man is the sole threat whose shoulders an entire nation's hopes rest on. Even if he had played the game of his life, Szoboszlai could still easily have been on the losing side such is the gulf between the two nations.

If Hungary fails to beat Andy Robertson's Scotland on matchday three, it will exit the competition in the group phase. For Liverpool, that would be no bad thing: Szoboszlai could then have a rest before coming back for pre-season.

Under new head coach Arne Slot, there will be a reset period for the $76m (£60m/€70m) signing. Given his ceiling and talent level, there is no reason to think that after a period of recuperation, Szoboszlai can't come back and make a substantial impact at Liverpool again.
