Liverpool have taken a step closer to signing Federico Chiesa as a replacement for Mohamed Salah - with Mason Greenwood playing an unlikely role.

Chiesa isn't in Juventus boss Thiago Motta's plans, with the Brazilian identifying Manchester United outcast Greenwood as a top target going into this summer's transfer window. The Italian may have to be sold first to help the Serie A club balance their books.

Should Juve successfully swap Chiesa for Greenwood, Liverpool will be in a great position to sign the Italy international, who they were linked with in the summer of 2023, and who new boss Arne Slot is believed to be keeping tabs on.

The Italian would provide the Reds with attacking reinforcements, with Salah, who only has one year remaining on his contract at Liverpool, strongly linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Juventus already have an agreement in place with United to bring Greenwood to Italy after the Old Trafford club green-lighted a move. The 22-year-old is entering the final year of his Red Devils contract and is expected to depart.

However, the transfer could still be a few weeks away as Juventus must offload players first to fund the reported £40million deal.

Chiesa burst onto the global stage during Euro 2020 and has only one year left on his Juve contract, but Liverpool face competition from both Arsenal and Newcastle for his signature.

The 26-year-old is the son of former Italy international Enrico and made his name at his father's old club Fiorentina before moving to Juventus on loan in 2020 and then permanently after two years.

He scored twice in Euro 2020, helping Italy win the tournament, but has struggled to maintain that form after suffering a serious injury a few months post-tournament.

Matias Soule is also expected to leave Juve alongside Chiesa. The 21-year-old Argentine impressed on loan at Frosinone last season, and there have been reports of interest from England and Saudi Arabia.
