Liverpool often has to be creative in the transfer market, as it lacks the funds to financially compete with the biggest spenders in the game. For instance, we have seen it pick up gems from recently relegated clubs, getting excellent value out of Andy Robertson, Xherdan Shaqiri and Georginio Wijnaldum in this way.

Another possibility is for the Reds to pick up top talent that has become surplus to requirements elsewhere. It is the idea behind this potential strategy that has seen Liverpool tipped by TeamTalk to sign Arda Güler.

He is currently in action at Euro 2024, where he scored a fantastic goal against Georgia. Güler will face a Portugal side likely to include Diogo Jota on Saturday, looking to make it two goals from two, but it’s his club situation which will most interest the Reds and their fans. French superstar Kylian Mbappé could prove to have an indirect impact upon the Turkish international’s chances of signing for Liverpool.

If that seems unlikely, bear in mind that Güler plays for Real Madrid. You would be forgiven for not realising this, though. The 19-year-old joined the La Liga giant from Fenerbahce last summer but only made five starts in all competitions. He didn’t play a single minute of his side’s triumphant Champions League campaign either.

While him not being heavily involved makes sense considering his tender age, it’s also worth remembering that his opportunities for playing time are unlikely to improve any time soon. Real is adding Mbappé and Brazilian wonderkid Endrick this summer. An elite player like Vinicius Junior is reportedly questioning his future at the club with opportunities likely to be restricted, so what chance does Güler have in that context?

The odds of him moving anywhere on a permanent transfer any time soon are small, thanks to him being under contract in the Spanish capital for another five years. A loan move appears far likelier, and we know that Liverpool is in the market for a wide forward this summer. As a left footed winger who plays on the right, Güler could theoretically provide back up for Mohamed Salah, though Ben Doak will have something to say about that when he returns from injury.

Whether he’s destined for Anfield or not, Güler is another play at the European Championship who is worth keeping an eye on. His strike against Georgia was ample proof of that.

Liverpool.com says: Michael Edwards didn't go near players on five-year deals before and it's hard to imagine the new look back office at Liverpool will either. A loan move is an intriguing prospect, though. The question is whether Güler would get many more minutes in Salah's position than he would with Real Madrid.
