Jamie Carragher was critical of England’s performance against Denmark on Wednesday following its uninspiring opening game win against Serbia over the weekend.

Gareth Southgate’s side have four points from a possible six in Euro 2024 Group C after the Three Lions were frustrated and rode their luck on the way to a 1-1 draw. Harry Kane opened the scoring before England’s performance fell completely flat and a strike from distance from Morten Hjulmand leveled the scores shortly after the half-hour mark.

England were never able to get back on top of the game and created very little to convince anyone of their credentials to actually retake the lead in the game. A lackluster night saw Trent Alexander-Arnold withdrawn early again from his midfield role and Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden all hooked off in a rare triple change.

Despite the Three Lions looking a smidge brighter with Reds target Ollie Watkins running in behind, England was again disappointing, just as it was in the 1-0 win against Serbia in the opening game.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, after the game, Carragher reacted to England’s drab performance as he tweeted at full-time: “Euro 2024 has been fantastic, but England have been involved in two of the poorest games so far.”

The tournament as a whole has been an exciting one, with hosts Germany opening the action-packed competition by stuffing 10-man Scotland 5-1. Spain and Romania have since enjoyed convincing 3-0 wins.

Italy’s narrow 2-1 win against Albania and Slovakia’s shock 1-0 victory over Belgium showed that even the lowest-ranked countries in the tournament are there to give it a real go. While Turkey’s chaotic 3-1 win against Georgia and Albania scoring a last-gasp equaliser to draw against Croatia have all made the opening week one of the most memorable in recent international tournaments.

But two games in for England, and the team looks dreary, lifeless and simply short of ideas or desire to break opponents down. Southgate has come under fire for his cautious approach that has seen England fans criticize him in the past, while Alexander-Arnold’s midfield experiment has so far failed.

Carragher did praise Southgate as he made the daring triple change with 20 minutes left to play, but was left perplexed that former Everton winger Anthony Gordon wasn’t among those who came on, he tweeted: “Pleased Southgate has made changes, as by the look of England so far they are going to need real energy from the bench in every game. Disappointed Anthony Gordon wasn’t one of those changes."
