Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the new Premier League season, impressively beating Tottenham 2-1 at Wembley to make it five wins from five.

Liverpool fans are dreaming of a first league title success since 1990, and even though it’s still very early in the campaign, the signs are that Jurgen Klopp’s men have the necessary qualities to challenge favourites Manchester City all the way.

For Spurs however, this was another disappointment, following defeat at Watford before the international break. Manager Mauricio Pochettino will know all too well that you can’t follow victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford with zero points from a possible six. The title already looks a long shot for the Londoners.

The visitors started like an express train, and inside a minute they had a goal disallowed. James Milner whipped in a superb cross, and Roberto Firmino touched the ball into the net – however Sadio Mane, who tried to get a decisive touch, was flagged offside.

The hosts, missing Dele Alli, really struggled to settle and after a mistake from Eric Dier, Mo Salah ran through on goal and fired a shot that was saved by Michel Vorm.

It seemed inevitable that Liverpool should score, and the goal duly arrived seven minutes before half-time. Spurs goalkeeper Michel Vorm punched unconvincingly at a corner, and Jan Vertonghen’s clearance from a Milner corner was headed straight back at goal by Georginio Wijnaldum. Vorm caught the ball, but not before it had clearly crossed the line. The Hawkeye system confirmed it was a goal.

It was all too clear how much Spurs were missing first choice goalkeeper, World Cup winner Hugo Lloris, who was out injured.

Tottenham badly needed to improve, and they came out for the second half with more purpose, although Vorm did well to save low down from a Sane effort.

Lucas Moura had Tottenham’s best moment of the match so far when he burst into the Liverpool penalty area and fired in a shot that cannoned off a post.

But Liverpool struck again after 52 minutes, Mane crossing in low and the ball turned against his own post by Jan Vertonghen. With Vorm on the ground, he couldn’t prevent the ball bouncing through his hands and into the path of Firmino, who tucked away from close range.

The home fans were clearly restless by now. Remember, this should have been the first game at their new White Hart Lane. Instead it was the often unfriendly surroundings of Wembley and a home defeat that already leaves them six points behind Liverpool.

Salah had a late curling effort well saved by Vorm, while Mane shot straight at the Spurs keeper when unmarked. Liverpool were by a distance the better team.

The visitors did have some anxious late moments however after Erik Lamela fired home a stoppage time goal for Spurs.

But it was too little too late. A happy journey home for the Reds. Now they must prepare for a mighty three weeks before the next international break, which includes league and cup meetings with Chelsea, the start of their European Cup campaign and a titanic clash with Pep Guardiola’s City.

It may only be the early autumn but this season is already shaping up nicely.
