Liverpool has reportedly failed in its attempts to hijack Juventus’ deal for a new goalkeeper, with the Reds still facing uncertainty over their own options.

The Reds currently have three senior options in the goalkeeping department – Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian. How many of those will still be at the club at the end of the summer remains to be seen though.

Adrian has been offered a new deal, although he has admitted he wants to move back to Spain amid links with his former club Real Betis. Kelleher, meanwhile, has hinted he could leave this summer in order to take up a number one spot elsewhere.

Even Alisson has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, although that will hopefully prove to be nothing more than speculation. Nevertheless, the Reds could be forced to enter the market for at least one new goalkeeper this summer.

Reports in Italy suggest they’ve already tried, and failed, to land one option. According to Tuttosport, Liverpool made a late attempt to sign Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, but will likely have to watch on as he makes the move to Juventus.

It’s claimed that Liverpool made an offer of $27m (£21m/€25m) for Di Gregorio, which was turned down due to the 26-year-old having already agreed to join Juventus. The Turin club is set to wrap up a loan deal with an option to buy next summer, although the total fee still comes in under what Liverpool had reportedly offered.

Liverpool.com says: How much of this report from Italy is true is certainly debatable. $27m is a lot to be splashing out on a backup goalkeeper, who will likely only play a handful of games a season.

It has been suggested that Di Gregorio could have eventually succeeded Alisson as first-choice at Liverpool, but then if that’s the case, the club may as well hold on to Kelleher. The Reds would at least know what they’re getting in that case.

The speculation though does indicate that Liverpool knows it will be losing at least one of its goalkeepers this summer, which leaves something of a dilemma for Arne Slot and Richard Hughes with other priorities elsewhere in the squad. Do they stick with the options already at the club – Vitezslav Jaros is currently with the Czech Republic at Euro 2024 and could potentially make the step up to the senior Reds side next season – or do they twist and look elsewhere for an option?
