Trent Alexander-Arnold's contract at Liverpool will be the topic of discussion in the coming weeks, with the defender's deal entering its final year. In the meantime, however, he has risen on the list of the club's top earners.

Per Sportrac figures, Alexander-Arnold is earning around $229k (£180k/€211k) per week at Liverpool currently. Last season, that salary was the fourth-highest in the squad.

In second place was Thiago Alcântara, who unfortunately has to go down as one of the pound-for-pound worst investments in the FSG era. Rarely available, Liverpool was paying him an estimated $254k (£200k/€235k) per week across his four-year Anfield stay.

The departure of Thiago has bumped Alexander-Arnold up to third on the list of Liverpool's highest earners. Only Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah take home larger salaries, with the new deal the Egyptian agreed in 2022 worth as much as $445k (£350k/€411k) per week.

Salah is now in the same boat as Alexander-Arnold, with that bumper deal up for renewal again as it enters its last year. He appears to have more or less confirmed he intends to stay at Liverpool for another season, but the future beyond that remains more uncertain.

It will be a tricky test for new sporting director Richard Hughes. With Van Dijk's deal also ticking down, and Thiago having now left, Liverpool will need to address the contract situations of all three of its highest earners in the same summer.

Elsewhere, Liverpool shaved another $127k (£100k/€117k) of the weekly wage bill by releasing Joël Matip. Unlike Thiago, he was able to overcome his injuries sufficiently to cement his status as a club legend, but will leave having not featured since December due to his latest setback.

A raft of new arrivals feature in Liverpool's top 10 earners, indicating how the market has shifted in recent years. Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister are believed to be earning $191k (£150k/€176k) per week, placing them joint-fourth with Alisson Becker on the list of club salaries. Dominik Szoboszlai rounds out the top 10 alongside Cody Gakpo on $153k (£120k/€141k) per week.

Liverpool.com says: While these salary figures are not always 100 per cent reliable, they are certainly a good rough guide to the Liverpool wage structure. It's undeniable that Thiago's departure will be a major saving, with Alexander-Arnold taking his place on the earners list.

Should a new deal be agreed for the full-back, there's a good chance he will move up again, potentially overtaking Van Dijk. There's little doubt that Liverpool intends to build its next-generation team around his talents, and will need to pay him a wage that reflects that.
