Liverpool have been told they would be "crazy" to sell Darwin Nunez this summer - and been warned it would be difficult to replace the striker.

Nunez has endured a mixed time since arriving at Anfield for a potential club record £85million two years ago, despite scoring 33 goals and providing 17 assists in 96 appearances thus far.

The striker, who turns 25 next week, ended the season largely on the bench to prompt talk of an uncertain future following the departure of Jurgen Klopp as manager.

New Reds head coach Arne Slot, however, is understood keen to work with Nunez, who is preparing with Uruguay for the forthcoming Copa America and scored a hat-trick in the recent 4-0 friendly win over Mexico. And former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes the Anfield outfit should keep hold of the forward.

“I think it would be crazy to let him go," he said. "I think he’s got more to come. I'm not sure he's ever going to be Luis Suarez or those type of numbers, he might not be a Robbie Fowler in terms of an out-and-out goalscorer.

"If you look at the last season, he hit the woodwork more times than anyone else. You only need 60-70% of those to go in and be a bit more calm with his finishes and he's starting to hit the numbers you expect from a striker.

"Brilliant physically, he never lets himself get down or his head drop, which is a wonderful attribute. He’s a nightmare to play against because he always gets in. He can outjump you, he can outrun you."

Speaking to Fastest Payout Online Casino, Murphy added: "If you’re the manager coming in and deciding to bring in your own striker, you’re going to do really well to find one better. And he has got room to improve. He doesn’t need to become (Erling) Haaland. He just needs to improve a little bit, 15%, and all of a sudden you’ve got a hell of a player.

"Liverpool are blessed in forward areas at the moment, they don't need a striker to score 30 goals if Salah is still here. Jota and Diaz get you goals, Gakpo is another one, they all got double figures. The question arises more what do you if Salah decides to go? How do you replace those numbers?”
