The 17th edition of the European Championship got underway on Friday night, with hosts Germany thrashing Scotland 5-1 in Munich. Yet Euro 2024 truly begins on Saturday, as it is the first of seven days in which its possible to watch three whole matches.

Liverpool supporters will probably be most interested in the opening game of the day. Reds midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai will captain Hungary as it takes on a Switzerland side likely to contain former Liverpool attacker Xherdan Shaqiri.

Taking an interest in the fortunes of your heroes past and present is not the only reason to watch international football though. There is also the opportunity to check out players you do not see on a regular basis, inevitably with an eye towards potential transfers.

For instance, the Reds have been linked with Spain’s Dani Olmo, who should start against Croatia in the second of the matches today. He is aware of the rumors, but is inevitably keeping his cards close to his chest.

"I am open to possibilities that may arise, but I am going to give you a cliche: I am focused on the first match of the Euro Cup," he said in the print edition of Mundo Deportivo (via Paisley Gates), a Spanish outlet which also noted Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester United have taken an interest in the 26-year-old.

"It is clear that it is good to see your name related to great teams in Europe and the world,” Olmo said in a different interview recently. It may be worth Kopites keeping an eye on him, but which other players with whom Liverpool have been linked might be in action today?

Hungary vs. Switzerland

Fans of ancient transfer stories will enjoy watching Ricardo Rodriguez, the Swiss defender who was heavily linked with the Reds during the early years of the Jürgen Klopp era. It’s safe to assume the 31-year-old has missed the boat as far as that potential move is concerned.

Teammate Denis Zakaria is another player with Liverpool previously listed on his transfer gossip CV, but there isn’t anyone here likely to be signing up for Arne Slot this summer. All eyes on Szoboszlai in this one.

Spain vs. Croatia

As well as Olmo, there are several Spaniards who could feature that have cropped up in the Liverpool rumor mill in recent times. Midfielder Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad is one such player, for starters. You can add Bayer Leverkusen’s Alejandro Grimaldo to the list, as well as Nico Williams of Athletic Bilbao.

There is nobody for Croatia who appears likely to be currently on the Reds’ wish list. There were certainly links with Marcelo Brozovic in the past, but it’s impossible to see Liverpool bringing a 31-year-old back from the Saudi Pro League now.

Italy vs. Albania

As Albania will field a defense largely comprised of players from Serie A, it is perhaps surprising none of them have been linked with Liverpool. Reds fans will at least be familiar with captain Berat Djimsiti, who has faced them four times with Atalanta, including starting both games this season.

The Italian side should offer greater points of interest. Federico Chiesa is a long-term target for Liverpool if you believe everything you read, and indeed his price tag has reportedly been recently set by Juventus. Similarly, the name ‘Nicolò Barella’ seems to be linked with the Reds every time the transfer window opens, and he should also be in action for Italy later today.

That makes a total of six players with recent rumors connecting them with Liverpool who may feature at Euro 2024 today. There’s plenty of talent for Reds supporters to observe in their own private scouting missions.
