Darwin Nunez has his sights firmly locked on Uruguay’s Copa America campaign this summer ahead of his return for Liverpool under new boss Arne Slot.

Nunez scored a hat-trick last time out for his country in a 4-0 friendly win over Mexico that was marred by fan trouble and had to be ended early. The treble means he has now scored in each of his past five international matches, netting eight times in all.

Nunez recorded 31 goal contributions for Liverpool last season, with 18 of those goals. He will be eager to stake his place in Arne Slot’s starting XI, having begun just one of Liverpool's final seven league games.

The attacker failed to register a goal or assist in those closing seven outings, and scored just once for the Reds from April onwards. He may be hoping to send an early message to Slot while away with Uruguay this summer.

Nunez - who has 11 goals in 23 caps for his country - missed the 2021 edition of the Copa America due to a knee injury but started all three games as the nation exited the 2022 World Cup at the group stage.

Uruguay, 15-times winners of the tournament, face co-hosts the United States, Bolivia and Panama in their Copa America group as they go for their first crown since 2011.

Nunez will hope to be a leading star at this summer's Americas showpiece under head coach Marcelo Bielsa, who has managed to get the best out of the striker during his tenure.

Nunez is clearly looking ahead to the tournament, writing ‘Vamo Uruguay’ on his Instagram account, alongside official photos of him in Uruguay’s away strip.
