Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has issued a message of support to Hungary teammate Barnabas Varga, who was hospitalised after suffering a concerning injury in Sunday’s Euro 2024 clash.

The 29-year-old received extensive medical attention inside the Scotland penalty box towards the end of the game before being led away on a stretcher after lengthy treatment. A statement from the Hungary FA later confirmed Varga was in a stable condition in Stuttgart hospital.

Hungary head coach Marco Rossi later added: “Fortunately now we can say Barnay is not under any kind of risk. Probably he will be operated on in the following hours because he suffered a fracture. The most important thing is he is healthy.”

Hungary kept their knockout hopes alive thanks to Kevin Csoboth’s 100th-minute winner in the 1-0 triumph..Captain Szoboszlai, who looked emotional when Varga was receiving treatment, has now sent a message to teammate Varga on social media.

He posted 'Magyarok', which is Hungarian for 'Hungarians', and a number 19 to his Instagram account along with a picture of his team-mates celebrating after the game with Varga's shirt and a snap of himself in a '19' shirt.

A second statement from the Hungary FA explained that Varga has broken a number of bones. It read: "Several bones in Barnabas Varga's face were broken during the collision during the match, and he also suffered a concussion.

"The Ferencvaros striker is most likely to undergo surgery. He spends the night in the hospital in Stuttgart. The whole team is rooting for him!"

During the post-match congratulations over the win, Szoboszlai put on Varga's shirt as he led his team in dedicating the match to the attacker.

Meanwhile, the result meant Andy Robertson's Scotland exited Euro 2024 having picked up just one point across three games. The nation have never qualified out of a group stage at a major international tournament in 12 attempts.
