Former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has high praise for the club's new head coach, Arne Slot, backing his fellow Dutchman to succeed as he did at Feyenoord.

The Reds are undergoing a major shift as we speak, with the club transitioning from former manager Jurgen Klopp to a new set-up of coaching and backroom staff. Taking charge of the first team is Slot, the winner of one Eredivisie title and one KNVB Cup from his previous role in his homeland.

During that tenure, he invited ex-Reds hero Wijnaldum to train with his Feyenoord squad while the midfielder was in search of a new club last summer. From that experience alone, the 33-year-old has been able to provide a full insight into what Liverpool can expect.

"In Arne Slot, I think Liverpool has really acquired a great successor," he told Algemeen Dagblad. "The fact that they don't all know Slot inside out in England is not a problem at all.

"I trained at Feyenoord for a few more days at the beginning of this season and there I saw how Slot worked. That was of a very high level, I thought that was really great."

Having won four trophies under Klopp at Liverpool, he later competed under the leadership of Jose Mourinho at AS Roma. During that one-season loan, the Italian club finished runners-up in the UEFA Europa League.

Speaking from those experiences under all three managers, Wijnaldum concluded: "I can compare him to Klopp and Mourinho and then I say Slot is of the same level.

"Yes, he’s coming into a completely different world now, that’s just the case. But that doesn’t mean he can’t do what he did at Feyenoord there?"

Wijnaldum, alongside current Reds trio Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, are all warming up to compete in this summer's European Championships with the Netherlands. They begin the tournament on June 16 against Poland as part of Group D, which also features Austria and France.
