Life as an unused player at an international tournament must be quite strange. When there’s news constantly breaking about your potential transfer, it must be weirder still.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon is currently at Euro 2024 with England. Despite the side carrying very little threat down its left flank, Gareth Southgate has only given the former Everton player one very brief cameo across the Three Lions’ four matches.

It could be that the England boss feels Gordon might be distracted by the immense speculation over his future. It has been widely reported that Liverpool approached his club with regards to signing the 23-year-old, but that the deal has not been completed as Newcastle wanted Jarell Quansah to be included in the deal. While the Reds were not open to losing the young defender, it has now been revealed that a different center-back might have been used in part exchange for Gordon.

The details of the saga continue to emerge, piece by piece. The latest addition to the picture comes from The Telegraph. It is stated that Gordon's head has been turned by the transfer speculation, despite Liverpool failing to make a bid that matched Newcastle United’s asking price.

It was interesting to read that the hierarchy at St James’ Park that Liverpool was trying to secure a bargain deal for the England international. Even if that is true, it is the nature of the business. Liverpool doesn’t have as big a budget as the teams with which it competes at the top of the Premier League so it has to be creative in the market.

But would that creativity extend to losing an England international? According to the report, Liverpool 'talked about' potentially including Three Lions colleague Joe Gomez as part of the deal.

It isn’t clear if the Reds were open to losing Gomez, or his name was merely floated as a suggestion by Newcastle. He is at an interesting point in his career though. The 27-year-old is the one player who was in the first team for the entirety of the Jurgen Klopp era and struggled to hold down a position last season. While Arne Slot will want to assess every player at the club, could a parting of the ways make sense for both Liverpool and Gomez this summer?

Liverpool.com says: Gordon has one minute (plus stoppage time) at Euro 2024, Gomez has yet to feature. It would be fun to be a fly on the wall of the England dugout for their next conversation during the game with Switzerland on Saturday.
