Liverpool told ideal Arne Slot alternative if worst-case Tottenham repeat transpires

Paulo Fonseca

Liverpool are moving forwards with their hunt for Jurgen Klopp's successor with Feyenoord boss Arne Slot emerging as the preferred candidate for the role.

The 45-year-old emerged as the favourite this week after Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim was linked with the West Ham job. Senior sources at Feyenoord refused to rule out Slot leaving the club this summer with officials from Anfield now in contact with the Eredivisie side's CEO Dennis te Kloese.

Details over Slot's supposed move to the Premier League remain to be ironed out but Liverpool are expected to move quickly to replace Klopp ahead of pre-season. Slot is understood not to have a release clause in his contract at De Kuip but there are suggestions the Dutch side may be willing to accept a fee of less than €10million (£8.5m) as compensation.

Slot signed a new contract at Feyenoord in May last year when he was being courted by Tottenham, who instead appointed Ange Postecoglou. Slot signed a three-year extension after guiding the club to their first league title in five years. Feyenoord are expected to fail in their attempts to defend the Eredivisie title but they did win the KNVB Cup last weekend.

Should history repeat itself and Slot commit his future to the club once again, Liverpool would have to reassess their options ahead of next season. Amorim could become a viable option but Lille boss Paulo Fonseca has been tipped for a move to the Premier League.

European football expert, Andy Brassell, has explained what makes the Portuguese stand-out from his time in France which could make him an ideal candidate at Anfield. "Fonseca has been amazing for Lille over the past couple of years and really succeeded with Shakhtar before by taking a homeless club to three successive titles," he told Sky Sports.

"Another brave and front-foot coach who is very modern and connects with players on a different level. I would expect to see him turn up in the Premier League at some point. He's out of contract at the end of the season."
