Liverpool are not planning on making a move for in-demand Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz this summer.

The Reds have seen their name floated as a potential suitor for Wirtz, who enjoyed a hugely successful campaign with Xabi Alonso's side.

The 21-year-old scored 18 goals and contributed 20 assists in 49 games as Leverkusen claimed the Bundesliga and German Cup double while also reaching the Europa League final.

Such form has seen Wirtz called up for Germany's squad for the forthcoming European Championships and seen him linked with a number of leading clubs including Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

The Reds, though, are not in the running. Wirtz has operated primarily as a central attacking midfielder, a position Liverpool don't regard as a priority this summer, particularly given the player's expected asking price of more than £100million. And, in any case, it is understood Wirtz will remain at Leverkusen for at least the next campaign.

Spanish news outlet Marca, meanwhile, has claimed Wirtz and his representatives have a verbal agreement to move to Real Madrid next summer.
